Went down to Cal BMW and took a new 955i out for a spin. Oooooooo... Can you say smoooooootth? Tigers were never on my radar screen but oh my GOSH the new ones are fun to ride. Felt light, quick...has kinda sexy audio tone. Did I say smooth? The front suspension is finally dive-free, mostly anyway. Man, all that power was nice!

Competition is good and finally the GS has some. This oughta keep BMW on their toes. The owner of Cal BMW saw my big grin and stopped to talk about it. His opinion: it's the best bike Triumph makes, a sleeper whose awareness is now where the GS's was 15 years ago.

Oh, and smooth. Real smooth. Awesome smooth.

Then I went and drooled over a yellow GS in the showroom next door. I need a bigger garage.

Anybody out there ever ride a CapoNord? Those are supposed to be decent competition for the GS....also, had an email from a guy in Portland (or was it Seattle??) who reports a dealer up there has a Varadero for sale...the wingster version of the GS...

I had a nice ride up to Russian River/Bodega Bay area today. If you are ever up that way, check out Coleman Valley Road. Awesome little 10-15 mile road that winds from Occidental, CA to Bodega Bay. Fantastic views from the "top" of the road of Sonoma County and the Pacific. :D

I agree about the smoothness of the triples. I test rode a Triumph Sprint ST and man I was drooling after that ride. It was a flawless ride up to 120 MPH and coasted off the freeway to a super smooth stop. For just straight brakes I think Triumph makes the best in the market. I was really impressed with this bike. Lots of power and a fair price.Corners well and nice luggage to boot. ( British ...boot, get it? Dumb Joke) I think a good second bike might be the speed triple to rip it up whn Im not doing distance on my GS. Great site Baldy......L8er

The Tiger is smooth, powerful, top-heavy, and provided me with all the emotional appeal of riding a refrigerator. (Amana, in case you are interested.)

The CapoNord is narrow, powerful, butt covered in body work plastic. Nice engine, I understand. I'd like to try one.

The Tiger is a nice machine but I see two big problems.
1 The oil cooler is too exposed for off road work.
2 The oil filter is likely to be punctured on the first really rocky road traveled.
Big dual sport bikes really kick up the big rocks.
My pipes are dented from just this. The dents are where the oil cooler is mounted on le Tiger.
CrAsH and I have been down at least two roads that would almost certainly cause problems for the Tiger. Ask him about the road to Stella's cabin in Death Valley, Or the Tahoe rim trail. Both pretty awesome rides but at Stella's if you break you are really screwed. Buy the GS.

Just had a chance to ride the Tiger - Baldy/Chris is right - *very* smooth and a nice bike, but not sure how much I would take it off road. It seem that with the new one, they decided to go more toward the on road side. Aside from the lack of protection discussed about, the general highly located weight makes it hard for me to think about heading down a trail with it.

Nice bike as a "on road" GS competitor, however.

I've heard of a couple of instances of a phenomenon called "hydrolock" on the new triples. One of which is a speed triple owned by a friend of mine and the other was a tiger. They were dropped and when righted and started, they grenaded. Something about oil entering the airbox, then the combustion chamber, then blowing out a rod or two through the crankcase, dropping the contents of the engine all over the bitumen.

Does anyone know if Triumph has addressed this issue with the new 955i tiger?

Seems to be sorted on the new Tigger 955i. At least it is on mine.
Best bike there is ! Smooth, tons of Torque and plenty of fun to beat those plastic rockets out there on the twisties.
New footpeg "hero blobs" available in Titanium for those who like sparks.

The Tigers engine is its strong point, loads of power, smooth delivery, and surprisingly economical. However it is still not up to the standards of the R1150GS with its shaft drive, better suspension, abs, better cockpit, and residuals. I owned a 1999 Triumph Speedtriple for 2 years, covering 10,500 miles, 4500 of them was done in 12 days around europes finest roads. I say if you must have a trumpet then get a speedtriple, it is better looking, lighter, faster, and has the bad boy image,we all crave. If you want the best all rounder in the world, then its easy, the R1150GS

    Are you mad ????? :smile6
Waaaay too heavy, and far too much nice black plastic to be destroyed when I throw it into a tree. I've got a TTR250 for that.

Well I think its fantastic how far things have progressed with ADV bike technology. But at the same time one has to think that the more tyhings change, the more they stay the same.
