Here are the top 100 registered motorcycles in Italy for the year 2010 - since Italy alone represents almost half of all the European market for two wheeled vehicles, I thought this would be interesting to look at.

BMW dominates (over 6200 units of the GS1200 sold, four bikes in the top 10, the S1000RR the best selling liter bike, etc.), Harley is seeing a huge bump in sales year over year, Ducati is doing very well with the MS1200 (1847 units across models) and the Hyper 796 (1848).

Overall, a great year for BMW, Triumph, Ducati and, at least in Italy, Harley. The Japanese are losing marketshare like crazy - even the best selling Z750 only moved 1/3rd of the units it did 3 years ago. Aprilia continues to be very disappointed with sales of the RSV4, which in spite of glowing reviews and winning the WSBK titles continues to sell very poorly.

32 Nakeds on the list, those Italians love their nudes :lol3

A riding friend of mine has the 2nd most popular bike listed, the Kawasaki Z750. She loves hers, and can flat-out fly on it. Too bad it only sold here in the States for two years, very underrated motorcycle.

BMW's 1200GS and GSA combined are over 6000 bikes sold in a year, and more than the 2nd and 3rd best sellers combined.. :huh I would have thought Ducati's would be more popular on their home turf... they love their naked bikes... I didn't see any touring bikes on that list..

I think the break down by specific model type of multi is what's misleading.

In reality the multi 1200 is the same bike, it's justed listed here with or without luggage, and different 'S' suspension. In the case of the latter, which really for a bike that is supposed to have 4 different preprogramed modes of suspension adjustibility available to every model, is a bit misleading.

If we combined the multi 1200 sales figures to reflect as one model, we would see 1,847 units -- which would place the new multi at #6, just behind the hypermotard. So in that context, a pretty good representation by a domestic brand name.

The R1200RT at 19 is the only real tourer, but you are right, I would guess a lot less need for huge comfort to tour in Europe.

You could say that but then you would also have to group all harley xl sportster models together and they total 3061. And they are the are the same bike with different suspension packages and engine sizes.

Nothing wrong with grouping variations of the same model together - and yes, both the Multistrada and the Sportster have been extremely successful, as I had mentioned in the OP.

Harley really struck a chord with the Italian riders with their smaller bikes - I was amazed how many I saw around when I was in Italy last month. The mistique of the badass American cruiser is alive and well there, and HD is doing a great job of capitalizing on it.

And Ducati has got to be happy - the MS1200 gamble definitely paid off. It is moving as many units as the Hyper 796, even at its 2x price point. I predict the Diavel will also do extremely well. If badass is what they want, it delivers in spades... :D

Not just in Italy...the bikes you'll see most here in Cyprus are dual sports and nakeds. The Honda Hornet is hugely popular.

Not bad for the Dorsoduro :D

In other words the best selling bike is only the 15-th best selling two wheels vehicle... the other 14 most popular vehicles being all scooters. And three most popular models are all different capacity varieties of the same Honda model.
Do you really think that Honda lost their way?

It doesn't look like Rossi is selling very many Yamaha's, some people think he is a marketing gold mine but that list doesn't bear that fruit.

Although it looks like the Italians like Harley's dark custom models.

It surprises me the number of kawasakis in the top 15. I tought kawasaki sales in most of europe were mostly residual compared to the other japanese as they certainly are where i am.

Try looking at the total figures before, during and after Rossi and tell me if Rossi was a gold mine. Most importantly Rossi is a worldwide personality, not just for the Italian market, I would bet there are as many or more Rossi fans in other countries like Spain, France, England, Japan etc. than Italy. Rossi, I believe will have a greater impact on the Italian market now that he rides a Duc. BTW, sales were down in Italy 24.2% in 2010 from 2009.

A lot of Rossi fans don't even ride motorcycles, the Rossi replica R1's here are bolted to the showroom floor as no one wants to pay a premium for a bike that only stickers are different from the regular bike. Granted Ducati fanboys will buy anything Ducati puts out, but what happens if Rossi on the Ducati turns out to be a flop and he cannot win on one? Will they still empty the showrooms if they put out a Rossi replica?
