10W40 in RC8

    Hi guys,

    Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10w-40 is an oil I am thinking of using in my 06 990 Adv.

    The manual says 10W-50 synthetic oil.

    Would I be endangering my engine by using this particular very high grade 40-rated oil?

    I ran motul 300v in 5w 40. I wish I had run the 10w 50. When the bike gets hot(enough to turn on the fan) it becomes hard to find neutral. Next time I'm gonna use the 10w 50

    Loose some blood and get help at the IR.
    Then when they ask for Your blood type - Reply : RED!

    Its just as bad. If anybody ever asks from me - oil is not the place to be cheap at.
    If You ride only in medium climate and really novice pace - then the situation might not be so bad, but put the bike under stress in heat and under heavy hillclimb or so and the cheaper oil will become watery solution with foam in the motor and might cause wear and tear, that nobody needs...
    Plus the weird noises and loss of "bloodpressure" ...

    You are probably not going to have any problems, unless you ride like a lunatic in very warm climates.
    I believe a practical suitability test is oil consumption. If you notice increased oil usage in the way and temperatures you ride, then go 50, otherwise 40 will be good. I didn't notice any difference in my bike, but I always use 50 during the summer.

    The Mobil 1 MC oil comes in a 20/50 version as well.

    Just bear in mind that Mobil 1 is probably the best oil on the planet by a large margin.

    That's why I am asking specifically about that oil.

    It'll be fine. But I always run synthetic 10w-50. Except when i run synthetic 5w-40. Or Dino 15w-40. Or something else. But hey, I barely have 60k miles on my bike, who knows when something could go wrong.

    The 10W-40 should be fine, unless the ambient temps are unusually high. Just don't compromise on the other end of the oil specification. I believe the RC8 is a plain bearing motor and the camshafts ride on a thin film of oil that flows through a very small machined groove in the heads. If the oil you run is too heavy...say, 20W-50, you could seize a camshaft from insufficient lubrication. The heavier grades just don't flow well enough through small passages.

    +2 I run Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10w-40 in my KTM 950SE, 450XCF and my Kawasaki 1200. WalMart has the best price on Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10w-40, $9.00 qt.

    Its a just a huge statement that cant be backed up. And to say it is the best on the planet by a large margin...that right there is insane. I would argue up and down that there are many oils better than mobil 1.

    The only oil i dont like is Mobil 1 5w-30 (it sheers and if i can find them i can show you the oil analysis')<this is in a car not a bike>

    Very instructive reply, thanks for the information mate.

    Regarding my sanity in saying Mobil 1 is a standout product: sorry I did not mean to offend and I am not an oil expert, but I have twice seen oil test results and both times Mobil 1 made all other products look silly. So I post what I think I learned.

    Very, very happy to be proven wrong.

    Then that 10W-50 is what I´d use.

    I can´t answer on the endangering part, but 10W-50 is not very common for a manufacturer to recommend, so there may be some particular reasons, why this is so (other than the common reply, that it´s a conspiracy... :lol3 )

    I'm gonna leave it with this. Run what the manufacturer recommends and whether you like Mobil 1, am soil, motul, or anything else you really shouldn't have issues.

    I forgot asking ten people about oil will result in 100 answers. Run what you can and ride when you can. I like motul. I have my reasons for liking it. Doesn't make your choice wrong
