140 or 160 tyre on a R1150GS?

    Cant find any 150/70 size in the market here and was wondering if anyone tried a 160/60 for the rear? The tourance I have on has the tread depth but has become brittle and breaking off in chunks :kurt

    Haven't done it myself, but there are numerous threads here where inmates have successfully installed and run 140 width tires on their GS/GSA.

    I have not run anything other than a 150mm Tourance, but looking at the Metzeler spec chart I think a 140 would be a tight fit. The 150-section tire has a max diameter of 650mm, but the 140-section tire has a max diameter of 667mm. That's .67 in, which eats up half the clearance between the rear tire and the lower shock mount.

    Too tight for my liking. What tire were you looking at in 160mm-section?

    The 140 dimension is a far better choice for the 4" rim size, than the 160.

    depends on the tire... I've seen 120 tire that were wider than 130 and 130 that were wider than 140.

    P.S. I have run a 130 TKC on my 1150 & it worked fine

    I am looking at a Conti-go 140/70 for the rear. The 150/70 is almost non existent in the Indian market and the only options I have are the 140/70 Pirelli SD or the Conti-go. Thanks all!

    Well a 140/70 has a smaller diameter (14mm smaller) than a 150/70, but should work fine. your speedo will read a couple kph faster than your speed with that size tire, but not enough to be a big deal.

    The Tourance is a 140/80, which makes the difference. A 140/70 should be fine.

    Sir, the speedo on a R1150GS works on the front wheel, and if I'm not mistaken we are talking about the back wheel here?

    I just put a 140 Heidenau on my GS. It's rubbing the Maier hugger a little offroad, but it doesn't look bad so far. I like the height and the feel. We'll see!

    I used to run 140's Heindenau K60's with no problem and a mate of mine runs E07's as they are cheaper than the 150's
    I recently read a post where a bloke on a trip around Oz fitted a 160/60 road bike tyre on his GSA 1150 so he could get home.

    BTW, on this topic again...

    I realize I'm speaking from the 1200 perspective, but my clearance does not appear to be similar at all to that in the photo of the K60 on an 1100. I'm guessing the shock mount or the length of the swingarm is different... I have plenty of clearance between the tire and the shock mount with the 140 K60.

    I used a 140 Mitas e09 on my 1200gsa recently...best dirt tire for the GS/A in my opinion. I don't like the K60 (comparing it to the TKC 80).

    Thanks a lot guys for all the replies! I've decided to go for the ContiGo 140/70 at the rear and have managed to source a 110/80 distanzia for the front :D.
