The donor engine is coming out of the frame now that the pipe is built. I really like the job that Avery did. He re-worked the footpeg bar so that the pipe tucks up real close to the engine.
While in the "Sunny Southland", I met up with a couple of Yamaha Enduro forum members. One had foam, the other, a reproduction seat cover. The seat will be back together in a short time.
While at the AHRMA races last weekend at Willow Springs, I found a used Akront shouldered 18" rim. I've always been a big fan of these and since the stock steel rims on the bike are so rusty that the chrome is peeling off, I figured I'd splurge and go for good looks and lightweight. Now to find a 19" for the front.

Spent several days taking wheels apart and scrubbing crap off the hubs and spokes. Nothing photo worthy!!
While in CalEfornia, I visited Dennis Kanegae who I worked with at Yamaha International. Several years ago, I went a little nuts and sold a lot of my old motorcycle riding gear, an old wool Bell helmet jacket, Bell helmet gear bag and so on... I had talked to Dennis on the phone and he asked if I still had my Ken Maely boots and steel shoe. When I told him I did, he immediately wanted to buy them. I was in the selling mode and said "What the heck".
Before I shipped them off to their new home, I thought I'd try them on one last time. I last used them during the 1975 half mile season at Ascot, and rode the Dirt Digger's Dinosaur TT at Perris in 1977 without the steel shoe.
To my surprise, I could not get my feet in the boots! I long ago outgrew my leathers, but boots!!??
Fast forward to the last week in April and my visit to Denny's home. Dennis says that they really belong to me and I should have them. He took the boots to a shop and tried to have them stretched to fit his foot. No Go!!
I got home and last night thought, "What the heck" and tried them on....
They fit!! Thanks for takin them to the cobbler Denny!!!
Oiled em up real good and their ready for the Spokane shorttrack if I ever get the bike back together!!
cool old mailey boots..one of my speedway buddies still races in a pair and mailey shoe of course..original mailey shoes are great..much better then the pre stamped stuff you can buy now a days for Daytona Speedway boots.
After a lot of scrubbing and polishing, the rear wheel came together today!! It's been about 37 years since I laced up a wheel. I forgot a few things and had to start over once, but got it done in about 3 hours.
Heading to McCall Monday to have the crankshaft rebuilt. That's one thing I never learned to do.

This is getting to be fun now!! Rainy day in North Idaho, but I spent the time going through the carburetor. Figured that since the rear wheel was done, what the Hell!! I'm gonna see what the Dunlop K180 looks like on that Akront rim. It'll be interesting to see if the DT1 can spin this up real good at the Spokane shorttrack races!!
The GYT cylinder has been re-habbed with a Nikasil job done by Millennium Technologies. The photo doesn't do the quality of the work justice.
When I moved north, I lost the abillity to drive 15 minutes to one of the best machinists I've ever known. Road trip time!! Greg rebuilt the crank and repaired the buggered up mag end of the crank. Someone had beaten the carp out of the crank trying to get it out of the cases(??). I tried to file it back to a round end and chased the threads. All I managed to do was make the threads thinner and weaker. Greg laid a weld over the damaged threads and cut new ones.
The rod that was on the crank was possibly the original. I feel a lot better having the slotted 431 rod in the motor.
Front wheel time. This thing was just so crapped up, it had to be redone!!
Oh, I better mention again, I"M A CHEAP ASS!!! I'm reusing as much stuff as I can.
The spokes and nipples had 42 years of crap on them...
Since I finally found a 19" shouldered Akront and was the high bidder on Ebay, I had to clean everything up to be as shiney as this beauty!!
My way of saving $35 bucks + shipping "IF" I won the auction on Ebay for the NOS set of front spokes... Ah hell, it only took 2 hours!
So the nipples are in the tumbler and should be clean by morning.
Tomorrow is wheel building day!

I have a question for anyone that has worked on restoring these bikes.
My buddy has a CT1 175 (and a 250, I think) and is looking for a source of tires that would be close to original.
Anyone have any suggestions?

This only took about an hour from start to finish.
Looks a lot better and is lighter than the steel rim.
Got the front tire mounted. It's an old Goodyear DT, but it will work for what I'm going to be doing with it!!
I had cut a bracket out of the frame so that the K&N filter I plan to use will have a straight shot off the carb. I needed to grind down the welds and paint the frame cause that's just the way I am...
Hopefully the last time this thing will be upside down!! Even after it's done...
Early on in this thread, you could see how rusted the mag was. I found out why and just now got around to fixin the problem. A section of the main crankcase had been knocked out, hit from the inside. So, some JB Weld will take care of the problem. Sorry, no before picture of this one...
After pricing the bearings needed to do a quality rebuild on the motor, I called Brown Bearing in Spokane and found their prices for the same Japanese made Koyo bearings that Yamaha sells to be about 1/3 the $$$... WTF?
For the same price I would have paid at a Yamaha dealer, I got all the bearings and this slick bearing and seal installer set!! Wish I had one of these years ago..!!
Life sucks without a shop!! When we moved north from McCall, the plan was to build a shop in the back of the house... Long story short, the setback on our property won't allow for a shop. The garage is overflowing and no room for the press, so it lives in the shed at the side of the garage with the lawnmower... and the studded snow tires. As you can see, nothing but the best stuff in the shed.
A Rubbermaid plastic tub for my work table and an old 7up wooden crate for my stool.
Bearings and seals are brand new and the crank and transmission are back in and ready for some Yamabond. I have to get all the fasteners together before that can happen. All the screws were rusted and butchered by the wrong or worn screwdriver being used on them. I have a can full of blackened allenhead screws that I just need to pull the right lengths from and then glue things up....
Here is the final result of the case repair. After the JB Weld cured, the area got sanded. I was lucky that the PO had silicone the broken piece into the hole. It's not going to be a "Show" quality project, so... This is as good as it is going to get. Looks a hell of a lot better than it did before.
My old fire department injury has been kicking up, so I haven't been doing much work in the garage. It's been raining and the dampness really gets to me. Got this far yesterday. Need to find a plug for the case where the oil line goes to the cylinder, then the sidecovers can go on.
Since the original finish on the case covers was silver paint, I found some Yamaha silver case paint and brought these covers back to life!
I stopped at one of the local salvage yards and found a fairly decent 1970 DT1 gas tank. It's in much better shape than the original 1968 tank.
