1982 XR200R 6v - 12v Conversion

    i am trying to swap out the stock 6v head and tail light on a stock 1982 Honda Xr200R to a brighter 12v setup ... the bike has a street title and i just need a bare bones setup. . (no blinkers or horn or battery)


    ..... any detailed suggestions on how to wire it all up?

    (the possible parts list = ... 12v rectifier, mechanical pull brake switch, 12v hi/lo 8" bucket, a high discharge capacitor and a 3 wire 12v enduro tail light )

    You really shouldn't have to do much. If you wire in a capacitor, believe you will have to direct your lighting coil light to that, and then split the output to your respective headlight/taillight. I've done similar with my older TT500. Be warned; running said lights will work, but not too effective when both are running, especially you're brake light. Recommend putting a simple 2 way switch for the headlight just in case you run in the woods; that way your brakellight is somewhat visible.

    The regulator you linked to is an AC regulator. If you use that, don't use the capacitor (Battery eliminator). That's only for DC systems.

    If you want a DC system so you can use an LED taillight or power a GPS or something, get a regulator-rectifier and use the capacitor with it.

    Id see if Ricky Stator still (or did) make a high output stator for it and get that and a regulator rectifier and the 12v sockets and all for it....do it right and you'll be happy and have piece of mind.

    I'm not sure why you would use a rectifier or capacitor; you don't need either of those when using incandescent bulbs with AC current.

    If you were converting to DC then they would be needed.

    For either one you'll need a 12v regulator and likely a new stator.

    The '82 or '83 XL200R used an AC system to power the headlight with a seperate system for the DC powered stuff and ignition was on it's own circuit. The headlight and ignition on the XL are close to what you already have; a wire diagram from the XL would be beneficial.

    If you are using the factory tail light, it is probably a single pin and you can't get brake light function with just a switch unless you switch to a two pin socket. There is an option of using a resistor in the circuit with the single pin socket and using the switch to bypass the resistor when braking, causing the light to get brighter.

    I have used LEDs for tail lights with AC current and I have yet to have one fail, they just visibly flicker a little bit while idleing.

    i ended up buying only the trailtech regulator and tying it into the single wire powering the lighting system. works fine. brake tail (12v led) and headlight 12v (25/35w) work fine with no battery.

    Did you change out the stator from a 6V to a 12V?

    You say your XR200r has a street title. Did you change out or hook up brake light to the single bulb tail light?

    How much brighter is the 12V vs. the 6v lights?

    I have a 1983 XR200R. We need pictures .
