Hi all, I'm new to the site and will take any advise on riding since I just started riding this June (2017). My bike is a 1983 Suzuki DR/SP 500 dual sport. I have found out that this bike is the predecessor to what we know as a DR650SE. I know this because the lower end of my motor is identical to the 90-96 1st gen DR650. The only difference is that my bike has a 88mm piston and the 650 has the 95mm piston making the extra 150cc's. I will do my best here on the site cause I am a Full-Time college student and Volunteer Fire-fighter in my community.

    Thanks: Eminent Videos.

Neat looking bike. Lets see more pics of the motor and forks. I got a DR650 and would help you if I could but I guess if you can find the right rings and seals, you are good to go. Here is a good youtube that might help you

Here is a picture of the front, it was taken right after I got it home from the auction. Best $700 ever spent.

I would get some fork boots on that ASAP. If you ding them with a rock they ruin the seal and are a bitch to get smooth again.

I think they already have had scratches cause the seal/dust guard on the right hand fork is leaking, that and the rear shocks/springs are toast after a trip where the rear tire came out of balance doing 70MPH and was 200+ miles from home.

Thanks. It has been a great bike so far, I just have to find out where I have a oil leak coming from, it is around the valve cover but can't see signs of where it is exactly coming from.

I'm looking into tires and I'm not sure what I'm really going to get yet. I've been looking at Shinko 705s for awhile now and probably going to buy some (I'm aware of the foil tape on the inside of the tires). I have found on the front that 90/90-21 is a good swap for a 3.00-21 tire and on the rear 120/80-18 for 4.00-18 (Factory tag says 4.60-18 but not sure of a metric tire comparable in size).

Well I bought a set of Shinko 705's Tuesday and today 9/22/17 they arrived, so I installed them and what a difference it makes with new tires. The bike is just more responsive when going into a switchback.

I keep forgetting to get pictures to show but I was working on my bike diagnosing a oil leak and in the process I found a stress fracture in my fuel tank. I cleaned and epoxied the area around it till I can afford a DR650 tank but I also know I have to modify the mounts some to get one to fit.

Yeah. Many people think I'm saying "Hot Springs" so I emphasize the k in Hawk. Lol

True, but I was talking about the frequency of hearing about places like HS, Yoder, Jay Em, Van Tassell, etc. No one talks about 'em much.

No, but I lived in the Wheatland/Glendo area for 18 yrs. If it wasn't for good coffee, beer, food, music, and the wrong woman I'd still be there.

Well this weekend 10/6/17-10/8/17 I'm going to be west of Cheyenne but not quite to Laramie for a camping trip, I hope we don't get snowed out. I'll try to get as many pictures as possible.

These pics are what I thought were worthy to share, the location is Eagle Rock, Medicine Bow National Park, Wyoming.

I was having a issue with my voltage regulator so I got to thinking what would happen if I put 12V regulator off a B&S Vanguard and retrofit the wiring.

what I did is find which wire off the stator puts off the most Volts AC and the White/Red put out 30.7 volts and the Pink wire put out 8.3 volts. I ran wires from those two to the regulator and W/R wire takes the rectifier. Then all I needed to do is wire everything back together and take the rectifier before the battery out. It runs 14-16Volts at 3000RPM as to what I've read from other threads. I am sure that when I put a headlight bulb and taillight in my peak voltage will drop to where it needs to be.

Sorry if it isn't a good write up right now. I am just testing a theory that this should work.
