1985 Honda XL350R carburetors

    I've got some questions about the carbs. Does 1 of them work at all times and the 2nd one kicks in from the mid to top end? Which one works throughout the whole range? The 1 on the left per chance?
    Is there a way to tell if the 2nd one is kicking in?

    Is there an easy way to richen the idle so it will start easier? I did something easy on my XR250L and it made it kick to life real nice (I just don't remember what I did).

    Thats right, the left carby operates all the time and the right carby kicks in at higher throttle openings.
    You can tell by the sound of the exhaust when the second carby opens.
    Not sure how to easily richen up the mixture.

    When you get past half throttle, just like the man before me said, you can hear the engine open up and feel it. atleast so on my XL600

    The air mixture screw should be on the bottom of the main (left) carb according to my manual. You shouldn't have to turn it more than 1 and a half times. The 83' XL600 has one on the side.

    Does the 2nd open in response to throttle pull or rpm? ie. Is there anything to physically see moving on the 2nd or does it open in response to rpm/then the vacuum lifts?

    Yes there's the air/fuel screw on the left of the left carb. It has a tab on it that limits its movement. On my 250 I dremeled off the tab so I could turn it more and richen it up. I think I may have raised the needle using a washer as well. I remember it made it fire right up 1st kick.
    Has anyone tried that?
    How hard is it to remove the carbs? Do they come out as a unit or seperate?

    The second carb opens with linkage--so it's mechanical not vacuum.
    I used a washer on my XL600 needle and, yes, it made a difference.
    The carbs are kind of a PITA to remove. They come out as a unit.

    The second one is operated all mechanically.

    You can cut the tab, I recommend it. On my XL600R, Which according to the book is the same as the 350, they come out together. You can seperate them if you need to, but you can do most the work on them together.

    Nice video. But I see some differences. The fuel mix screw that is already dremeled in the vid, I don't have. Mine has a horizontal screw on the left side of the carb (which is not on the 600 carb). So I'm wondering if mine has an air screw instead of a fuel screw?

    Now that I see the vid I recall my 250 had a weird way to get the needle out. I bet the 600 and 350 are the same. Something about a spring and removing a screw inside the carb? I'm thinking there's a vid on this as well? Anyone know?

    Behind float bowl (towards the rear) = air screw.

    In front of float bowl (towards cylinder) = fuel screw.

    You should have an air screw.

    I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to know how to remove the slide needle to shim it. Sorry about that.

    brucifer - ah yes thats how I recall the carb looking inside the XL250 I had. Can you remind me how to remove it? I recall a spring on the arm and having to remove a screw...

    Yeah, the spring holds the link arm on; remove it. Then remove the two tiny screws that hold the link plate to the top of the slide. Make sure you use a screwdriver that fits well and lots of down force so as not to round out the screw heads. The linkage should now come out as well as the needle.

    I either watched a vid or step by step instructions online before; any idea where to see that?
    So when I go to add the washer to rihen it up a tad bit, should I open both carbs and add a washer to both needles? Makes sense to me, but thought I'd ask.
    Do you know of any easy/cheap way to get a little more throttle response and pep out of the bike? I could remove the snorkle but that won't do anything with the stock exhaust I assume.

    Left stock carburetor. I assume its an air screw to the lower right of the square. If so, I assume I have it set as rich as possible, correct?

    Left carb after I dremeled off the tab. I turned it all the way in which would RICHEN an air screw. Stock setting was 1.75 turns out. I set it at 1 turn out. I forget, should this make it easier (richer) to kickstart, or is it the raising of the needle that makes it easier to start?
