I recently got an ugly little 1986 white Elite 80, which is soon to be army drab green with maybe a red star up front :evil

The engine runs okay for sitting around the last two years however, there is a real "grinding like" noise coiming from the transmission area. It's kind of high pitched but not a squeal.... it gets worse as I pick up speed at about 40 it feels like something is slapping around in the rear end, or the belt is slipping... I back off a little bit and it stops. I haven't opened up the cover yet, and really have no idea how the tranny's on these work. Anyone else experience similar? Is there any other things I should be looking at besides just the belt? Any thoughts??? Thanks!

old belt? Driven face or drive face worn out with age? It's a can of worms till you look. you ll have to make Variator/Clutch Tool to take it all apart. but this one if for a helix and elite 250. Don't know if it well fit your elite 80. search google for elite 80/125/150 forum. They ll know more then I do about them. Also search honda elite 80 manual.pdf. More then likely someone has scanned the OEM service manul for it and posted somewhere. I know you can find the helix and elite 250 online for free. Also you may just have worn out wheel bearings. http://picasaweb.google.com/rickrussell/VariatorClutchTool?feat=directlink#5490476783514049442

Got the transmission taken apart, and most of the bearings inside the transmission were shot. There was zero oil inside and good amount of metal shavings from what appeared to be the countershaft rubbing against the internal plate. Just ordered a "good condition" used transmission off ebay and we'll see how that works.
