1995 r100 GSPD Gear Shifter Adjustment

    Im looking to adjust the gear shifter to accommodate my new boots ( no room )

    Is it a simple procedure?

    It looks like it will adjust by loosening the locking nuts and then turning the threaded shaft to the desired length.

    Is there anything I should or should not do?

    I'm new to this and don't want to make a stupid mistake...........thanks

    That's about it.

    While you are in there, remove the spring clampo holding each end of the joint together and clean out the old grease if you haven't already.

    Also, the pivot point on the frame has needle roller bearings. You can much improve the shifter action by washing out the old grease there and putting new in.

    I made some adjustment, which made it a little better.

    When I am wearing my old boots I seem to be able to upshift very easily. The new boots ( Sidi. Adventure) have a little more bulk at the toe and less flex, my entry angle to get under the shifter is quite steep and I find myself having to
    " look " for it ( not good ).

    It may improve as the boots soften up a bit ????

    Any thoughts on any aftermarket shifters that operate better than OEM?

    On boots, I used an old MX rider trick and filled my new boots with water, let it soak in and then used all my body weight to flex the boots, re-fill and repeat.

    I broke in a pair of new MX boots in about an hour.

    As to the aftermarket shifter, I am thinking you are taking about the roller conversion, haven't ever used one myself.

    It is most definitely not good to be looking down at anything while riding a motorcycle. That is taking ones mind and attention off the task at hand. If some small thing needs a moments eye glance it's one thing but stuff tends to take too much attention if we are not careful.

    I made this mistake once and it was really even more stupid than something like new boots. I was fumbling with the petcock and I didn't have to look at all but for some reason I did and I was not paying any attention to the curve in the road. Bike survived with a little road rash, mostly slid on the grass. I had a little road rash too but mostly it was my ego that was bruised. Maybe there was a good side to this, I haven't forgotten and it was almost 10 years ago.

    I totally agree, looking down not good.

    Just got the bike recently and trying to make adjustments that make it feel more natural to fit my body size and riding position.

    I have been walking around the house and workshop most of the day with my new boots on, jeans tucked in ( not sure why ) much to the amusement of my wife, who gave me a few dirty looks as I spoke to her with a german accent ( no bloody sense of humour) , don't mention the war.

    I'm not sure how long it will take to break these puppies in ( Sidi Adveture ) ?

    The Adventures are great, I love mine (Adv Goretex), they are not super flexible by nature. You can try adjusting the clasps, but these are a sturdy boot by design.

    And mine have been squeeking for months, don't think that will go away soon either.

    You'll have better luck adjusting your gearshift lever than waiting for the boots to loosen up. I had to adjust my lever in the same manner.

    You'll find a happy medium between a boot setting and a normal shoe setting. As with most everything Airhead, compromise is key!

    I'm in the same boat,........new boots and it not wanting to get "under" the shifter very well. I've been shifting from the side of the shifter, but that's already old. I think this weekend I'll put on my glasses and see what I can do with the shifter setup, and go from there. I really "Don't" want to cut and weld on the stock shifter, but all options are open as of now.....:lol3

    I did make the adjustments and it is marginally better. Still cannot get toe fully underneath shifter though. I see you have the same bike (100GS), let me know how you make out.

    I see Wunderlich America have a shifter that looks like it may solve the problem.

    Son of Beech,.....Sheet! :eek1 They are Very Very Proud of that shifter. I think I'll just put the toe of my left boot in a vise, and hope for the best....... :lol3 :lol3

    One thing to note about that shifter is that Wunderlich says it fits the GS and GSPD, but these bikes attach the shifter pivot at the forward position - the shifter pictures show the lever in a rear pivot configuration.

    It may just be a generic picture and the real part would be appropriate... Or you just may have to flip it over (but then the lever bend would be upside down and the spring-loaded collapsing protection won't work as intended). But might want to call to verify.

    I'd considered this shifter since I don't want to mod my stock lever. But I've been lazy and haven't called to verify fitment (mostly because I might then be compelled to order it!!!).

    I spoke with the technical support at Wunderlich ( toll free ), very helpful.

    The owner had just fitted this to his 1988 GS, says it looks and works great.

    The product installation instructions show it fixed in rear position, rather than forward. He said that it was no problem to reverse the shifter.

    I could barely fit my motocross boots under my shifter and I've small feet compared to most rider. I don't know how you guys upshift?!:eek1 Just moving it one notch forward made my shifts a lot smoother as well. I just cut the old one off and welded in a hardened steel bolt. I recommend using brass spacers as opposed to nylon for obvious reasons.:D

    Man I don't know how you guys do it. I have tried wearing black off road boots and my feet just bake, especially if the sun is on that side. Like a frigging torch is on them. Real pain I'm tell'n ya. I've pulled off and soaked my feet/boots in lakes to cool them down. Having owned 3 oil heads I thought the "beemer burn" was a myth. Concocted when Harleys had no suspension, Triumphs never ran, and BMW's never quit. I can tell ya, it's real on the airheads. I now wear brown unlined boots. The gal that does my pedicures has defiantly noticed, and is much appreciative.

    I am glad you guys are working this issue out. I don't think I have ever rode a gs with my size 13 MX boots but I have never had an issue riding other airheads with MX boots on but then my High Points were new in 1978. I think a lot of the issues here are the boots themselves. A lot of new boots are just too thick. I can't feel the controls good enough with them. I think the extra weight becomes a safety issue crashing at high speeds. Nothing like having ten pounds at the end of each leg to keep the momentum up! :lol3
