I can get a 1996 DR650 with 15,000 miles. Runs fine drives fine.

I'd do a complete tear down and re-paint the frame and then build back up with upgraded suspension, tank and a few other details to improve the adv characteristics of the bike.

    $1900

    Or

A 2002 with 24,000 miles, I would not do a complete tear-down but I would upgrade the same things as above.

    $2500

I don't mind doing a complete tear down and I enjoy that type of thing as it really teaches me about the bike. I really think the 2002 is a slightly better deal but not by much. Thoughts?

    Tough choice for sure.

Both are reasonable, mechanically the same, mileage (if maintained) is no problem...
Down the road the newer bike "might" be worth more on resale.
Any valuable extras with either bike?
One seller more negotiable than the other?

Personally, I like lower price to leave money for personalizing mods.

You will be happy with either bike. :D

The 2002 is stock. The 1996 has few upgrades (lowered pegs, "rejetted carb, k&N). Looks like a wash, but I too like extra cash for upgrades.

Depends on your long-term intentions: If you want to keep the bike take the 96er - I did so myself. If you want to be able to sell it later, the 2002 is now 11 years old while the 96 is 17. The younger bike will be easier to sell. Technically there is NO difference.
