2006 950A: clutch going away

    Over the last week i'm losing clutch "throw". I'm guessing the master cylinder seal is going bad. There is oil in the reservoir.
    What are your thoughts? Is it possible to replace just the O-ring if i new what size it is (does anyone know?). Or better to replace piston assembly.
    Or is it something else?
    Bike is stock w/ 51K miles.

    KTMtwins.com has a master rebuild kit that has all the parts you need to refresh the master. I now carry one as a spare. Take a look under the rubber sleeve and see if it is leaking. Mine had that happen.

    Thx for the replies. But i'm hoping i can throw an O-ring in there as a quicky fix. I may have one at work. Comments?

    The sigutech is a replacement fot the slave cylinder, next to your right foot. KTMtwins are selling the rebuilt kit for the master cylinder, close to your left hand. Two different parts of the clutch.
    IMHO if you have a master cylinder failure, you need more than a rebuilt kit. You need a new OEM master cylinder, or a resleeving and a new piston.
    If you have a slave cylinder failure, you can try replacing the oring but you will eventually need to replace the slave with some aftermarket part, similar to oberon or sigutech.

    Thx for the replies. I had it in my head that the clutch master used an O-ring, but it uses a "cup" type seal. Hopefully someone local will have a kit.

    Left and left it is.

    I believe the bore surface is damaged, so replacing seals is a temp solution. I resleeved my master cyl with a fabricated inox sleeve, reducing the ID from 11mm to 9.5mm and installed a Magura for off road bikes. That should last longer than the OEM.

    Less clutch throw, still fluid in the reservoir.

    Did you try just bleeding the system?

    Did hear much about master failing while slave failure empties your reservoir. Coul just be air in the system.

    It's probably the slave not the master, try bleeding it first to see if that restores it but if it is the stock slave they are known for going bad. I just replaced my oring on the road but had a new shipped home so I could replace the whole thing. Make sure if you replace the slave that you replace the backer as well.

    And if you get a new aftermarket slave, make sure to also replace the backer also. The stocker is plastic and does not play nice with a new aluminum slave. Ask me how I know. :cry On second thought, don't it is still painful to think about.
