2006 KTM 450 SX street legal conversion

    I have the chance to buy a street legal ktm 450 sx

    I've been searching this site and google and haven't been able to find much out about this.

    Anyone have any experience with a 450sx thats converted to be street legal?

    what kind of mpgs can i expect?
    is it any good on the street? :ear

    btw he only wants 2k

    i gotta '06 SMR, which is the supermoto'd SX... i really like mine, have gone the other way, and just converted it to dirt, but i have all the sumo stuff too......

    you gotta check the valve guides, make sure they're not bronze, cause' w/the titanium valves that i think it has(?), if they're bronze, it's probably already dead... if they're iron, it's the badazz, supposed to last forever..... pretty much a known problem.... they went to cast iron in '06, so unless it's a leftover motor, you should be good, but i'd definitely check anyway.... the ti valves are like MSRP $250 each.....

    mine was street legal also, and i think it's the total shizzit....

    i paid $4K for mine, like 4 years ago, but it had alotta bling on it, M4 header/can, steering damper, TT stator system, slipper clutch, pretty much set up sumo.... the slipper is nice on pavement, don't know if i like it in the dirt, probably nicer on the engine, though....

    i get around 40 mpg on the street, but if you get it hooked up, that AC pump will squirt alot, and it goes down from there fast.....

    all the squids will argue, but a cush drive on the rear end will seriously be nice on pavement, and be nice to the engine/drive train. it ain't that much money, and if you try them both, it'll be no question.......

    those can be stupid fast bikes.... i really like mine.... after messin' w/some later KTM's, that later version of the RFS motor might be the best thing that KTM ever made..... they're still race motors, and they do require some maintenance/knowledge .... not a casual, aircooled honda thing....

    If its still a 4 speed its going to suck... very badly.. on the street.

    otherwise it's a good bike at a good price.

    yeah, what he said... 4 speed is motocross track stuff.... i think the SX's were 6, but don't quote me....

    I just picked up a 07 xcw and made street legal. I'm pretty sure the sx is the 4 speed while the xcw and exc are 6. This weekend will be the first weekend of actually riding it so I don't know about fuel range yet.
    I've heard that if you dual sport these bikes you will want to run a cush drive rear wheel, so be careful till that happens.

    i wuz wrong.... my factory manual says '06 SX is 4 speed, the SXS is 5 speed, both close ratio..... whut's an SXS?.... KTM has so many acronyms....

    The sxs was a Euro only "factory" bike Available to the general public.

    The sx is a close ratio 4 speed, same 1-4 as the mxc. (All rfs motors have the same 4th gear)

    yeah, except they make alotta HP, don't weigh 7 kabillion lbs., got excellent suspension so they handle great, and they don't shine as much.....:lol3

    If your road variety is very narrow and you ride near the same speed most of the time you could gear it for where you ride. If not it will suck. 1st gear in an SX is somewhere between 2nd and 3rd on a exc and the ratios are really close.

    I can't comment on the SX, but I can comment on the gearbox. My bike is an '05 MXC, and has the same 1-4 gears as the bike you are looking at. I've actually got a complete EXC tranny on my bench waiting to go in, but the close ratio box has come to grow on me.

    On the SX, it seems fairly common for people to swap in the EXC 5th & 6th. That gives you a close 1-4 for aggresive riding, then the taller gears when you are trying to cover some ground. Search KTMtalk; tons of info on this there.

    lotta voodoo in this....

    i just converted my SMR to dirt.... got the close ratio 6 speed box.... i wish i had the lower 1-2 of the wide ratio box for enduro type stuff.... the close rato is too high 1-2 to pull up the front easy... and the riding i'm doing ain't gonna go to 60mph+, so... probably out west, desert, you'd want the higher 5-6 wide range gears, though.... crazy stuff....
