I am using the Nuvi 500 with the RAM mount. As others have indicated, I must cradle the GPS before attaching power; yes, it's kind of a pain. I have mine powered by the front outlet so it turns off with the bike and attached to the handlebar. It blocks the speedo, but doesn't matter as I use the speedo on the GPS.

I've mounted my Zumo 660 like this and the windscreen bracket has brocken twice now within a short time. Has anybody else had this problem?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

There is a whole AdvRider sub-forum dedicated to GPS's at,

    http://advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=75

Lots of answers and probably the best place to search. My particular unit is a Garmin 376C (a lucky and inexpensive find for $150), but it is older and no longer supported by Garmin. Nevertheless, some consider these Chartplotters (276C, 376C, 478, etc.) as the off-roading gold standard because they are tough, have buttons and have big screens. I also use a Ram mount and like the vibration isolation of the rubber they use.

I hope my gps lasts a long time. It works very well.

    YMMV.

These were the parts that I used for the Montana install on my 2010 GS:

I got all the parts from gps city, save the BMW 3-pin connector for plugging into the factory GPS connector.

    1. Garmin Montana 6xx AMPS Rugged Mount with Audio Power Cable...
    SKU: MONT6MNTPOW MODEL: 010-11654-01

    2. RAM Mount Steel U-Bolt Motorcycle Mount Base RAM-B-231U
    SKU: RAMB231STEEL MODEL: RAM-B-231U

    3. RAM Mount Rectangular AMPS Plate B-Ball RAM-B-347U
    SKU: RAMB347 MODEL: RAM-B-347U

    4. RAM Mount Adapter for Handlebars (Item 2 contains one of these, but I ordered anyway b/c I didn't know for sure and it was cheap)
    SKU: RAP319 MODEL: RAP-319U

    5. RAM Mount Locking Knob Brass Thread for 1 inch Socket Arm (not necessary, but I like that I can adjust with no tools and can lock the mount as well)
    SKU: RAMKNOB3L MODEL: RAM-KNOB3LU

    6. RAM Mount Short Arm B-Socket RAM-B-201U-A
    SKU: RAMB201A MODEL: RAM-B-201U-A

    7. BMW Accessory Plug Connector (straight from the BMW parts catalog)

    +1. Garmin Montana 600.

I got the 600 because all the 650 offers is a crappy 5mp camera which is useless, and while the 650t comes with topo maps pre installed, you need to have it plugged in when using basecamp.

Speaking of which if you get the Montana be sure to factor city and/or topo maps onto the price because they don't come pre installed.

    It's a great GPS though.

Here it is on a RAM mount, I've since installs it centered on the GSA bar with an SW-motech mount.

Love it... and to my mind perfect for the GS.

Have a ball mounted directly to one of the 4 handlebar mount bolts - with a small Ram arm - unit sits right over the handlebar mounts - with direct power to GS - GPS accessory plug.

    +++1 on the protapers also.

If you have an older GS like mine - 05 to 08 I think (I have 06 adv) then you might want the Protaper - Raptors which are an ATV bar with a much higher rise than moto bars and a bit less flat like the MX bars.
