2012 ktm 690 enduro R owners, any major problems ?

    Yes, a 42 rear sprocket with drop your cruising rpms by about 400rpms. Or you can go +1 on the front sprocket for the same result.

    This will seem a bit over the top, but I was astonished by how much difference an aftermarket air filter made - I was intending to change the gearing (for the reasons stated), and only held off doing so as would have to have changed the chain as well – subsequently added the new air filter, and the bike feels as though it has a new gear - now cruises at 110kph at < 5K revs, which is pretty comfortable - I won't now change the stock gearing, which is ideal for the enduro end of things ...

    PS: if determined to change gearing, take the counter-sprocket up to 16 and leave the rear as is.

    2011 enduro R - Mine was a bit lumpy when new but got progressively better as it put on a few miles, Akra fitted and remapped, 2750 miles, no issues, runs clean and smooth right up to limiter in all 3 settings. No low speed idling problems, well no more than you get from any single, will never idle like a four. Best dual sport I've ever owned, wouldn't part with it for anything. :rofl

    2nd to that. The air filter really make a whole lot difference.
    only 2 thing you have to get used to. The engine sound (something which i get used to and loving it) and the filter getting filthy really quick.

    rode it in heavy down pour no problems at all. haven't tried any river crossings thou.

    Interesting that you found the same thing re' increased engine noise - I wondered why that was - almost sounds / feels as though the motor is breathing as it was meant to, which amounts to roaring - you do get used to it, and it is a nice sound ...

    The filter skins from KTM Twins will cut back the need for filter cleaning.

    My initial setup was rr foam filter with leo vince exhaust, and boy it was REALLY loud. But due to strict vehicle modification laws where I'm from (Singapore) i have to switch back to stock.

    with stock exhaust it did sound rather weird on low revs. but gotta love it when i you are at 3k and above. sounds more like a roar rather. hahaha

    yes placing order for the skins now. and prolly a spare filter as well. thanks for the recommendation.

    Can anyone say definitively whether the US model 2012 KTM 690E has a second and third gear restrictor? Just wondering if the de-restriction mod is necessary.

    Thanks for any help.

    I could have sworn that the US models were not restricted, but susequent opinions on this thread say otherwise. Others have said it's not worth the effort ...very little noticeable difference...
    Both my 2008 & 2012 have not been modified...

    The '12's have no 2nd and 3rd gear restriction....from what I've gleened.

    If the 2012 have no 2nd & 3rd gear restrictor then why do they have the 3 wires coming out of the transmission on the left side like those shown in the de-restriction threads?

    My 690R 2013 has big oil consumption?!
    around 0.5l-07l per 1000 km, I use Motorex Crosspower 10W60 fully synth.
    It has around 4000km,
    In general it runs perfect.

    You could try running some regular (non-synthetic) oil in it for a few hundred miles to see if the rings will set.

    Got a 2012 690 enduro as a replacement for 990 advenure and DRZ400. I have some complaints. Heard reports that 690 forks & shocks are harsh. I planned to find a KTM suspension guy for adjustments. (optimistic because ktm's got to be good stuff) After about 2200 miles of mostly dirt and having the forks done with some improvement I gave it a final test. Dialed in the compression and rebound until I felt it was pretty good. Still seemed harsh but maybe it's just me. To put my mind at rest I got the DRZ400 out that I had not ridden for a year and went for the same 60 mile ride priviously done on the 690. The Suzuki was wonderful! Smooth & compliant forks & shocks that did not upset the whole bike, my back or wrists on every sharp hit from that unseen rock. All the good seats, fuel tanks, and other good stuff that could make it a great bike doesn't really matter if the suspension doesn't work. Looking for ideas to make the suspension more compliant. Right now it looks like ktm cheaped out on a potentially great bike.

    Burgerkingman, I don't own your bike, but you may try a lighter oil in the forks, or revalving. Its no big deal. These bikes are set to go balls out fast.

    Not so much cheaped out as speced the suspension for a different type of riding. The 690 started life as a SM and that suspension is wonderful in that application.

    My 2012 KTM 690 R Enduro has 600 miles and the throttle body has detatched itself from the engine twice. Any updates?

    I'm a bit surprised so many people have this problem but nobody has had a good look at why it happens. This happened to my 2012 690 twice in the 1st few hundred K's so the 1st place I looked was the clamp that holds the Boot to the Throttle Body. If I tightened it up all the way, I could still rotate the T/B slightly in the Boot. It seems the small spacer in the clamp was preventing the clamp from tightneing enough so I simply removed the spacer & re tightened the clamp. Problem solved. Never happened again.
    This took Me all of 5 minutes to diagnose & fix on the side of the trail so I find it funny so many people cant figure this out. Some times the easiest solution is the most overlooked.
