After a short bit we decend into Ellensburg where we stop for lunch. If I remember right, it was about 1130.

Johns asks about an oil change but they only have Crisco.
    He declines :lol3
    [IMG]

All of us high on the day discuss our plan for the rest of the today. We want to make Bethyl Ridge and make camp. Could we make it before nightfall ?
Mike is also telling me "don't look now, but over your left shoulder is some guys crotch" :huh
    [IMG]

We decide we are going to make a stab at Bethyl Ridge. But we need grub, so we boogie down to the local super market and do a little shopping.

We quickly fuel up and leave Ellensburg behind us............

We set out for the much touted , challenging 'steep and rocky sections of our trip starting with Umtanum Ridge on the Old Durr Rd.

But 1st, I just had to have Chevron with Techron since we can't get it here in NJ (so Im a little anal), the other grabbed 1st gas available. Consequently I was a good 15 minutes behind them. Again, never an issue with us, in fact we kinda relish it :clap

Alone, I can see a ways and know the 3 musketeers are pretty far ahead. The landscape turns rocky, lunar, alien like if you follow me.
Feeling alone, I shut the bike off to feel ...................even more alone. Except for the solar winds......eh, I mean except for the wind, there was dead silence. Just the slow crackle of my cooling DR650 single.
I was just loving life right now fellas. I tell ya. It's moment like this that are very rare for me.

Down in the bottom of that gulch (Devils Gulch ?) is a creek and small oasis from the sun baked rocky almost desert like landscape.
I was all alone with my thoughts........
:patch "They had been through of course, their tracks giving them away to my keen eye. I would hunt them down like dogs and gain the bounty on each of them outlaws"......:shog
    Oh, ah, never mind that.
    :lol3

Heres some shot of the boys prior to my arrival at the creek.

actually took the trouble to shoot video. True, they were way out ahead, I was alone, this is all true.
    Whats that ? :ear
How did I soot the vid if I was alone ?
oh, ah, ahemm, lets not worry about that, just enjoy the clip eh. :lol3

After I get done playing "Manhunter" , I catch up to the bastards. Seeing the mighty DR, they quickly give up knowing there is no escape.
Actually I think I heard "gee Reinbold we thought you stayed to take a bag boy job at the grocery store".
    :lol3
    [IMG]

    Yea, lunar.

We gear up. What lie ahead would test tire, rider and suspension.

One of us out ahead, negotiating a rutted track littered with baby head rocks and steep inclines and declines.

This section was a workout. Keeping fully loaded bikes under control took all your attention. I can only imagine what it was like for Mike.
But, was only a warm up. Today would prove to be a long one.
After we were through and came to trees again, we took a break. Drinking most of our needed water.

If we were camping tonight we would need to replenish our water supply.
But where ? There nothing out here.
Follow me girls, Ill find ya water :gdog

I pull into the 1st farmhouse I see that doesn't look like a doomsday prepper lives there.
:(:I ask the kind lady if we could have some water. Just a little?

She spots the Jersey tags and Mikes "I love Snookie decal"
    ah oh......

:patch "well, I suppose you can have some of the horse water" "but not too much, my animals get thirsty you know"

I thank her, "thank you mam" and gently, slowly walk to the barn and fill our Camelbaks to the brim.

Nah, she said sure boys take all yer want!

Watered up, we push on. Bethyl Ridge cant be that far.
    Can it ?

What lie between us and Bethyl Ridge would take a thosand miles worth of rubber off my T63 and make a normally silent Mike P-Diddy Piazza proclaim:
"The shocks are boiling" ! :eek1
    [IMG]

Starting off with a very difficult downhill (thankfully for us running n-s), that had 2 riders running northbound on DRZ 400's off thier bikes and turning tail.

Half way down I notice a large black blot in the middle of the channel.

Once we reached the bottom we find the source of that black blotch and what it was.

    BMW 10W40 :eek1
The WABCDR took another victim. A GSA with a punctured valve cover. These poor fellas were trying plug a fist sized hole with duct tape. The cover was stoved in, the side of the GSA looked like someone took a 3' grinding wheel to it.
But they were cool guys. They would handle it and get the bike out of there.

Take the ride down Cleman Mountain with Mike on the Panzer. Of course you can't get a good sense of the decline angle, but you can sense there ain't now way your stopping that bike except on it's side if you don't keep her under control. You see the DRZ riders who also had to offer up their young to the mountain,

Well, being the diehards we are , or was it gluttons for punishment :hmmmmm we continued our assault through the unrelenting rock gardens of Bethyl Ridge.
    Motorcycle tourture test.
If you skimped anywhere with the Loctite, it would become evident
This is where Mike dumped the GSA going for the smoother line. A very rare occasion. The babyheads give way to massive ruts.

And then, and none too soon as darkness was close at hand,
    a killer camp spot.............

Bethel Ridge was a fantastic campsite.
Getting there was a challenge which made it much mo bettah!

The last few miles before we made it to the campsite we were all tired and had pretty much exhausted our energy. I dropped my bike on a rocky section late in the day because I was just drained. The section in Mike's video and another one a bit earlier in the day took their toll on us. Then the last few miles to Bethel Ridge were battling heavily rutted trails as it was getting dark.

Our Cap'n knew our objective for the day and kept pushing us on.

The views and the night at Bethel Ridge were our reward for a day of hard work. We ended the day knowing we had conquered the WABDR. Especially gratifying after seeing thr problems some others had.

In Mike's video you see him passing a bike on it's side trying to make it up the climb. It was a husband and wife team on KLX250's if I remember correctly. They had got caught up in WABDR fever and did not seem prepared for the difficult sections of the route.

By the end of our adventure I was wishing for sand. Anything but those godforsaken rocks. The WABDR and OBDR have rocks. Lots and lots and lots of rocks.

    Frank -

Thanks for the report. Life long Washington resident and enjoyed seeing parts of the state I hadn't seen before so I appreciate your efforts. How did your DR and your mods work out for the trip? Looking to do the Race Tech suspension upgrades on my DR so interested on your feedback.

    Thanks

    Mike

The DR was absolutely perfect Mike. I would not have changed a thing. The RT mod is a big band for the buck. Very good at sucking up the rocks

    Thanks everyone for tagging along.
And for you Washintonites. Please accept my apology for taking liberties with your state landmark names like Bethyl Ridge and Lake Chilean. Lol
Spell check isn't picking up on it and I got a lot going on right now. Posting a rr is more time consuming then the actual posts of it would indicate so bear with it fellas if you don't mind.

Will cont with day 5 asap
