“I did the best time in the prologue and so I opened the track of the first stage. I was comfortable on the first part till the refuelling because it was fast piste on a hard track, similar to what we are used to in Australia. I struggled a bit in the dunes because this is my first time that I navigate with road book and GPS but I’m happy because I’m learning a lot as we are using here the same navigation tools that we will find on the Dakar. Today there was even more dunes... i made a small mistake of navigation, and i lost some time"

Day 2 Ben went out and won the stage while still in learning / cruise mode !! :evil

Unfortunately on Days 3 & 4 Ben had to sit it out as he got a severe dose of Bali belly with dysentry, vomiting and a high fever :cry

Day 5 still suffering Ben hit the dunes again and managed to get a bit more Dakar training in and still managed a solid 8th outright

Despite missing a couple of days stages Ben felt he made the most of the opportunity to do some solid testing in Dakar style terrain and get his head around the GPS navigation prior to lobbing up to the Dakar start in Lima Peru come 5th Jan 2013 :thumb

    Who is HSE Group?

They deserve a look for supporting Ben as major sponsor. As well as all the others of course.

The Dakar is awesome but the top rider ONLY coverage is just a travesty to those riders/privateeers further down - Riders who we can all relate to struggling like hell without a million dollar support team. I just cannot imagine 14 days of that hell.

So when is a salt of the earth journo going to be born and get their aussie arse over there and do daily coverage of the real privateer battler riders - and post it all up here. I dont care if the aussies are coming 120th place - I want all the details and the goPro footage and scandal and the politics and everthing.

and i hope that spanish coma guy kicks that french guy in the nuts this year

Mate - the coverage here on advrider is awesome - it's totally addictive and you will get people chiming in to cover just about all the competitors.

Can we get a consensus on the best viewing options via the net? I've always found SBS so short that its severely dents the pleasure. We need something like the TDF coverage! Hint - I'm referring to old fashioned audio+video not tweeting, FB or text based spiel.
