I am kicking myself for cooking two of those bikes. I really do know how to operate a cable clutch I swear it. :rofl In the end that didn't actually hurt me all that bad, the hay bales took me out of the running. I looked over the final score sheet and the top 3 all scored something in the bales, everyone else got a zero. Its kinda strategy when a rider can fall down three times and still finish higher than a rider that only fell twice. But there are no excuses in the world of competition. A real rider can ride no matter what bike he is given, or how that bike is set up, and that's where I fell short. Not to worry I will be back in 2015 and I am going to beg borrow and steal as much time on a f800 as I can. Not that anyone in their right mind would let me ride there bike. :lol3

Fantastic report! I was there (#48) witnessing the great riders. Finished horribly but had the time of my life!
The #57 that flipped his bike was in my group. Rico was his name if I remember correctly. Super cool guy and he was definitely unstoppable!

Andrew, great report, pictures, and video. Your endurance in making it through the course was inspiring. Wish I could have been there. Dan

    DAN!!!!!
We really missed you this year. I was running around all weekend bragging about how you dominated the challenge last year. I heard you broke your foot.... if its true I am sorry to hear about that, hope everything heals up quick. We should get together sometime and do some riding / camping.

I figured you guys weren't going to get through the last creek with the clutch like it was.

    Jake,
Your a freaking rock star. My fat butt wouldn't have been able to move that dang f800 5 feet without you and Dan. I felt like crap when I burnt out the second clutch up on the hill, cause then I knew I had put you guys through that on account of my slamming it through the first creek. Next year you ride and I push.

    Dan,
If you guys get an f800 let me know, I need to rent one before the next challenge. Don't worry I'll bring my own pile of clutch plates. :lol3

So great to be among a group of knuckle-heads, going through it all together. I know that I learned a great deal more about my bike by participating - but I learned gobs more about myself.

When I saw some young bucks - with badass gear - doing no better or worse than someone 2 (OR THREE!) times his age - on something 20 years old, that shifted like an old Farmall Tractor - I realized.....

.... the bike doesn't care if you're fat, old, a man or woman.... the limiting factor is the fear of the unknown that we all share.

The first day - the seated riding - and road technicals.... I plumeted down in the standings, only because I was so completely in my own head. The things we were asked to do - I do all the time, naturally - without thinking about it. After lunch, and a conscious decision to relax and enjoy - and during our first foray into the dirt (and standing) - I think I placed in the top 10. I continued to remain unafraid and have fun - and that feeling has been staying with me since.

After our event - I rode the spine of the Appalacian Mtns all the way to W. VA - and at least 50% of it was on dirt roads and trails. It took me nearly 5 days - and I felt like a beast.

Look out for me next time boys (and girls). I plan on sweeping this thing with a fearlessness and calm that you've all helped me achieve.

I look forward to riding with some or all of you again soon.

DrWhipit was kind enough to put this great video together of Dan, Jake and I completing our team challenge event Sunday morning. I swear my back still hurts from pushing and dragging that worn out 800.
