2013 Honda CB1100

    True, except they built that bike, more or less, up until 2003. Pretty good run. No problems that I'm aware of. Begs the question why they couldn't have done hydraulic valves on the cb1100. Honda obviously knows how to do it. I wouldn't think cost is that much of a factor since the Nighthawk 750 was always a pretty low priced bike. Certainly simplifies maintenance and lowers the cost of ownership.

    Hydraulic valves don't work on higher reving bikes. My guess is they wanted the new CB to have a higher red line than those types of valves would allow.

    Depends on what you consider higher revving, The 700 Nighthawk of the early '80's redlined at 10,600. I don't recall the exact redline of the later 750's, but I'm sure it was at least 8500-9000 rpm.

    I'm sure they could have done it; my point was only that hydraulic valves on a DOHC inline-four are not something Honda (or any mfg) has commonly done and so to do it on the CB1100 would have been a fairly departure from normal practice and likely expensive. We've been living with shims on DOHC bikes now since the 1973 Z1.

    All this being said, most shim-adjusted systems these days have been marching towards fairly high adjustment intervals, typically 26K miles on Yamahas and 15K miles or so on most Hondas, Suzukis, and Kawasakis. To now have a 8K interval on the CB1100 is a bit of a regression; it's probably lower because the bike is air-cooled. I haven't seen a DIY on how to do it, but I assume it is fairly easy since the bike has no bodywork to remove and no cooling system to monkey with.

    It certainly wouldn't be a reason I would avoid the bike.

    Hi,
    I just put 1k miles of my cb1100. Went riding with a friend he pointed out to me that my bike is abs. Because of the control wire going to rear caliper. Does anyone know if this is right? Also have 2 piston calipers on the front x 2.

    :norton All CB1100s have the rear abs ring. It is also used for a speed sensor.
    The abs model also has a front abs ring. That is how you tell the deferents.

    Crilly is correct. If it doesn't have the front ring, it's a non-abs bike.

    I just got back from a 9 day 3,757 mile trip on the CB...
    It performed flawlessly in all conditions: 100+ degree dust storm in the panhandle of Ok. USA, 35 degree freezing rain and snow at 12,000 feet elev in Co USA, in the high winds at 14,160 feet elev of the highest paved road in North America (Mount Evans Co.), to the Desert of Az. USA and from the twisties of the "Million Dollar Highway 550" to the straight slabbing of the interstates. Very dependable and adequate motorcycle. I went 162 miles on a tank once(not by choice). I filled it up and figured 50 miles to the gallon. That was during a stretch of highway where speeds didn't surpass 65mph much if any. When slabbing it on the interstate at 72 mph- 76 ish it burns much more of course.

    Really? I'm 6'4" w/34" inseam. I sat on one in a show room 2 weeks ago and thought the seat to peg distance was pretty cramped. Have you lowered the pegs? Raised the handle bars?
