2013 Honda CBR500R and CB500F

    I got my driver license on a BMW F650GS (the 800cc parallel twin 650, not the thumper).

    Obviously it was the only bike I had ever ridden, though I found it very fun to ride and vibrations were really not an issue under 6000 RPM. Bike was geared quite high if I remember correct so with the 650 you could easily maintain 75 mph.

    Was also mucho faster than my current cbr250 :rofl I guess if I would ride it now it would feel as fast as the Millenium Falcon!

    Agreed on the individual tolerance for vibes, and how some certain harmonics can be unnoticable for most, but will just nuke other poor bastards.

    For me, I draw the line at "going to make some stuff shake" though, when parts and fasteners fly off, all the bulbs continuously implode, and I'm a wimpering numb heap within a few city blocks...

    Gazillions of happy owners sing the praises of their F800's and I wouldn't think to cast any untoward aspersions against them (the best forum on the 'net IMHO was the F800Riders.org, wonderful peeps there!) but *MY* F800ST was a hideous nightmare. :cry

    That's why I sold my Ninja 650R.. but the vibes there got worse as the
    time went by and there's probably an explanation.. but I was dealing with
    it for 2 years at that time and couldn't take it anymore.

    Now it's either a V-twin or a I4.

    Honda's 360 degree V4 as in the ST1100 or ST1300 is a great road engine. Creamy torque and only character vibes. No I4 buzz or V twin coarseness, ever, from idle to 9250 rpm where the rev limiter comes in. In the 1300 the dual counter balancers and geared alternator all turning opposite from the crankshaft cancel any torque reaction when the engine is revved. Bullet proof with many examples over 200 or 300,000 miles.

    Sorry for the thread hijack. The Honda 500s are going to revive the class.

    I'm very curious to see what other real world riders (not journalist's) have to say about the vibes of this engine.

    Parallel twins are real hit and miss for me.
    Love the character and vibes that the Ninja 250 makes, hated the way the Ninja 500 feels tho. Ninja 650 was about as perfect as an engine could be in my opinion. Triumph parallel twins....no thank you, didn't care for them one bit.

    That's the big question for me, where is this new Honda 500 going to fall?

    And another odd observation. I can deal with serious vibes from I4's and VTwins over long miles but Parallel twins are a love or hate relationship for me.

    only thing i have to compare to is my SV650 which is a vtwin. vibes aren't terrible for me.. but i'm still relatively "young".

    Triumph UK seem a bit rocked by the £109 a month finance offer for the Hondas.

    They are offering the Tiger 800 with £700 of extras, for £99 a month on a PCP.

    Remember, the T800 was launched at 94bhp with an eye to the euro-regs; ie. they do a restriction kit of 50% peak power, 47bhp.

    Over here we also have a Kawasaki Z800e (94bhp, same deal as the T800). No finance movement yet.

    Yamaha have 'announced' they will do a 47bhp kit for the 600 Diversion. An answer for a question no-one gives a fuck about tbh.

    Suzuki? Well, um, I don't know about Suzuki. Maybe a 47bhp Gladys, just to make it even more ghey.

    Good news though, A2/47bhp/35Kw style, is that the Moto Guzzi V7 has been approved as meeting the regulations.

    However, if you are in the USA all that means squat. You will just have to wait until you pay our gas prices to consider the 500s.

    Negatory Ghost Rider, I plan to replace my Ninja 250 with one of the new CB500 Honda's or possibly the NC700x. :evil

    I have a givi luggage set-up Naked Bandit 1200 for Sport Touring or hooliganism. However, I mostly commute and the new 500's look like an excellent option by way of purchase price, insurance, maintenance, reliability, and real world use.

    I'm glad Honda decided to enter this segment of the 'Merican market and I hope that they are very successful. :freaky

    I was being a bit naughty.

    The key, for me, will be how valid the mpg figures will be when the bike is ridden hard.

    If I can get 50mpg, in normal riding, from an 800cc bike, then I'll go T800.

    But if the 500s get 75mpg even if I throttle them, then I'll go H500.

    Triumph: 6000 mile services, great local dealer, love the Tigers, but allegedly 42mpg imperial.

    Honda: 8000 mile services, awful local dealer, not a huge Honda fan (but own one right now), allegedly 76mpg imperial.

    The biggest plus right now, for me, is that Honda are one of the few marques genuinely trying to attract new riders of all sizes, on all continents, and of both sexes.

    Sometimes that why I get shitty on this site about the Ride the World thing. Thankfully, most people ignore me :D

    Patriotically, I love Triumph. Riding, I love BMW.

    But I detest the 'premium customer' bullshit.

    It boils my ball sac.

    Ducati is kinda premium; MV certainly is; Bimota is so premium you don't even need a brain.

    But all these upper-class glass backs can't exist without a feeder class, and a good one.

    Valid MPG figures are an important part of it for me as well.

    My 250 Ninja averages 60-64mpg (US) with my 6ft 200lbs self commuting by highway daily. If the new CB500 engines are able to match or exceed that while providing more Torque/HP for 2-up riding and legitimate wind protection/luggage options I'll sign my name on the dotted line. Hell, they even have ABS as an option here. I've never rode a bike with ABS but I'll probably spend the extra $500 USD and get it for shits and giggles.

    Finally bikes built for everyday riders... What a concept, huh? :rofl

    I have high hopes for these bikes, I hope that they don't disappoint.

    I'm shooting for a hopefully slightly easier target of beating my 52mpg average of my sv for daily riding. Our gas prices are nowhere near that of euro but I still don't like them with my lengthy daily commute.

    Don't do it to yourself. A 500 parallel twin will feel like a sewing machine compared to an SV.

    let's not get it confused, the SV is staying for weekend fun. i just want something for my 110 mile daily roundtrip commute. i feel bad squaring off my SV tire day in and day out..

    A bloke that posts on the NC700 forum got to demo an R model today (in the UK) and posted a little bit about it. He said the engine was quite smooth and had plenty left cruising at 75 mph.
