The 690 would be a great bike to ride in that class!
Yeah, the ktm 690 seems like a bit of a cheater in the ADV class... I'm buying one in the next couple of weeks so I might just have to cheat.
I kinda thought the same thing. I'm still on the fence about the ADV class. But rules is rules
If I were to race the ADV class, the 690 would be the way to go.
Someone wanna school me on what a "poker run" means?? Never participated in amy event/ride sort of thing beforw. What are the main differences between the ADV and Iron man runs besides technicality of the course. Or is that the only difference?
You run around to different checkpoints, all on the trail, easy to follow, follow the guy ahead of you (oh, you're fast? lol, you won't be "in the lead"), or it's marked. At each check point you reach into a bucket and pull a card (it's not like a deck of cards, but it's cards, you'll figure it out, I promise). They read your card, punch it, and you're on your way. Best hands at the end of the day win prizes. I haven't had anything worth even checking either time I went (once, I wasn't even best hand in camp, the other time, I didn't finish).
Iron man includes a couple of obstacles that are a bit more intense than the family loop.
The ADV versions include areas you can't get to without a plated bike, and usually more miles, and from what I hear less whoops (but I also hear that's just a rumor).
With the ADV versions, you run a loop of the family run or the iron man run, then either the A or B loop (they have a "big bike" loop, and a "plated dirt bike" loop).

Hang on to your poker 'card' even if you aren't playing the game. They use it to stop people from poaching the course.
There are three events (family, ironman, ds), you sign up for only one of them. The course for each starts in the same place. The course on the private land is completely marked. Everyone goes the same way until the course splits into Ironman and Family routes. If you're doing the DS ride, take whichever route you prefer. If you're not doing the DS ride, just keep following the markings. If you are riding the DS, at some point you'll get back to the camp and then start following the directions in the roll chart for the public road section.
It's not necessary -but really nice- if someone in your group has a roll chart holder.

You changed your name?? Anyway, I would recommend the DS for you. Especially if you are planning to ride your KLR all the way over there and back. You can do the Iron Man or Family course on the property (if you choose to) and then head out for the DS only stuff off the property. At least that is how it was in the past. The trails they ran last year outside the property were real nice. I can't wait to rip them up on my 500 this year!
The D100 is a cool experience. I always enjoy running into people I know from all over the PNW when I am over there. You should watch the start of the race on Sunday too. It is pretty awesome watching all those riders head straight for one spot!

I will have a limited amount of chili dogs in the DS area for DS riders on Saturday eve, there will be a limited supply on hand, so be early. We will be in the DS area that SJ has set aside for the DS tent crowd. Look for the PSSOR canopy, we won't be far away.
XRL is out, the 690 is in! The family is doing good, we had our second boy and named him after you (well you share the same name). How's your 640 doing?
Whats this about there being a special area for tent campers?
The Iron Giant is well and looking forward to another Desert 100. My personal goal is to get out of the basement of the old man category. I'll be running brand new knobbies and working out to get in shape.
They had a tent area last year but it was right near the entrance, noisy and dusty. I'll probably hunt down a spot near last year's up wind of the dust.
Congrats on bedient junior and the new ride! Sounds like life is good.
My biggest frustration with racing is that the organizers and old timers talk in code that makes things confusing for noobs. And now I'm doing it too!
