    UPDATE 12-29-13:

The NYD Ride is On! - We will meet at the WaWa on Holland Rd, Va Beach before 8-9 AM. Kickstands up at 9 AM.

Here is the Route: 2014 Tidewater ADV NYD Ride

Route Summary - maximum backroads, very little divided highway:

WaWa to North West River Park
    NWR Park to ECity
    ECity to Suffolk
Suffolk to Cracker Barrel in Suffolk.

I drove the route today and found a couple of small errors. The shared Google Map is a pain to update so we'll leave it alone.

Importantly I learned that Muddy Waters Coffehouse will be Closed! Too bad too, the house roasted espresso was very good today.

We will have an opportunity for a couple of comfort/Gas stops, the first at the Border Station on Route 168, and another somewhere between Camden and E City on NC 158 at one of the larger Gas Stations. Not sure exactly which will be open when we go through.

I'll be at the WaWa at 0830 or so, See you there.

    Season's Greetings To All

I've started thinking about our Annual New Years Day ride and figured it was time to start a thread.

The weather forecast is looking very promising for a sunny day in the 40s.

Would like to hear from the collective on possible Routes with a nice meal stop.

Here's links to our previous NYD rides:

No real route suggestions, but count me in!

We were just talking about this at Nuggets Fork Tech Day today.

Maybe something on the Peninsula? The Gloucester area is really nice.

I'm thinking about running to the north side this year. Yorktown/Gloucester/Mathews maybe all the way to the SeaBreeze at Gywnn's Island.

Anyone been to Olivia's in Gloucester? Looks like a nice local joint with a good lunch menu.

Also could shoot for a Colonial Theme this year... a run up through Newport News to Yorktown then the Colonial Parkway to Williamsburg for lunch, and return across the Scotland Ferry and down 10.

    Just looking at options.

LOL! Hi Steve. Looks like I was typing at the same time you were. I'm headed to California for a couple of days then will see about doing some recon for who will be open for lunch and then build a route.

I know none of you know me, except Matt, but I'd like to join the ride. Have to settle a new renter into a property during that time, but hopefully I can ride along and may bring a buddy who, just today, accepted delivery of his brand new '13 GSA. He's an ADV virgin, so be gentleĀ…or not.

I was thinking something similar. If you wanted to lengthen the ride at the end you could take 17 down to 158 and have lunch at Peggy's Country Cafe or to stay off of boring 17 you could loop around back to Ballahack to Backwoods to Old Swamp and then hit 158. After lunch go around the swamp and up through Suffolk. The idea that TKLR had sounds good also.

Hi Sluggo, The NYD ride is a great time to meet each other. What better way to start a year? Welcome and bring your friends too. It's not a dirt ride, though we do manage to find some challenging conditions sometimes... like ice skating behind a working snow plow one year... not to worry, the weather is looking promising for a sunny day so far.

As for the route, seems we've chewed up Chesapeake a lot on these rides, and riding in ones backyard repeatedly is not exactly ADVventuring. Granted, we've ridden Suffolk/Isle of Wight lots too. That's why I was looking north, fresh roads and new friends await.

I do understand a lot of us have other things to do on NYD and can't be out all day, while others don't want to start anytime much before 9am. Makes for a challenge to get a decent route.

I'm also interested in supporting local businesses and always in search of a good cup of java. I recently discovered "Blend" at Buckroe Beach - with a fine selection of whole bean coffee, ground to order and served via Pour-Over. Need to verify they'll be open, Option 2 is Aromas in the City Center at Oyster Point Newport News. Daily Grind was good in VB but they were'nt open on year, so we switched to the WaWa station. At least it wasn't a Starbucks.:rofl

Anyway, keep the remarks coming. A ride in the wilds of the North or shall we hit marshland in search of the Skunk Ape?

The ride is what is important, not really where we go. Consensus will take the day - let your voice be heard.

We could go to Richmond and meet up with our neighbors too. That's a Ferry Ride (Tradition) and about 250 miles for the day.

I'll go lurke in the Richmond chat and see what's up.

Ride is On! Haven't had time to work on the northern route, so working on more familiar territory, yet still going "off the map" onto the backroads I've not travelled. Here is a link to the Google map for the Route: 2014 Tidewater ADV NYD Ride Route

Meet up at the WaWa on holland Rd between 8-9. Kickstands up at 9.

The route is calculating out at 3.5 hrs & 125 miles. Goes from the WaWa on Holland Rd, in Va Beach, down to ECity, around the Great Dismal Swamp, up through Suffolk and Driver, then ends at the Cracker Barrel on Portsmouth Blvd (Starmount Parkway). CB will be open with plenty of seating for us and anyone that would like to meet us there. Should arrive around 1 pm if we stop for a break in E City.

If you don't want to ride the full route, it's easy enough to break off until the about halfway point at ECity. I'm thinking a stop at Muddy Waters Coffeehouse (100 Main) would be good anyway.

I'm going to pre-run the route tomorow morning and make sure it works. If you want to ride along - I'll be at the WaWa around 0830 I think. There may be some small edits to the nearby state roads if I find problems, but basically it will be the same basic route.

Should be a nice ride, with some interesting sections.

I was able to pre-run the route today. should be a fun ride. Muddy Water Coffeehouse will not be open and 158 through E-City is torn up a bit, but we'll be able to do a comfort stop at one of the Gas Station/Mini-Marts on the west side of town.

I updated Post Number 1 as well.

See you at WaWa around 0830. We leave at 9.
