This ride had to be the most fun I've had on a bike in several years.

I quit doing group rides long ago because people always seemed obsessed with mountain goat trails that beat up my bike & body, and I'm just not that extreme. Plus, I consider auto clutches to be sacrilegious. So, I usually ride alone.

The trails yesterday were the perfect balance of flowy and technical. The surprise was that while I had ridden the Coke Ovens area trails several times, I only recognized about 25% of the ground we covered. A lot of yesterday's route was new to me.

I have to apologize for being "that" guy. When we parked at the Coke Ovens, I noticed this nasty black splooge all over my hub and rim. I had EZ look at it and he quickly assessed it as a blown tube, leaking sealant. This never happens to me. It had been 10 years since I'd seen a flat, which is probably why I didn't recognize it, LOL.

To add to the problem, I had no tools (aside from zip ties & a multi tool). Years ago I just hit a point where a combination of meticulous pre-ride prep and preventative maintenance rendered trailside repairs non existent. Between a UHD tube, slime, and sufficient inflation, flats just never happened... until I roll over a mystery katana at the Coke Ovens and my tube erupts slime and goes limp.

So, as I stood bewildered & confused, the ADV group rallied and inmates hooked my up with everything for a trailside repair... Tools, a shop towel, compressor, and most importantly a fresh tube (thanks Terry) and extra sets of hands.

That was amazing. Aside from a couple RockStars MC members, I knew nobody on this ride a couple hours prior, and ya'll just adopted me.

My 8lb STI UHD tube rode home in the SxS, and I finished the ride on a skimpy 21" tube stuffed in my 19" rear tire. (I truly think the STI tube spontaneously split, so I'm forever done with that brand)

Thanks to all of you. I had a great time, and I'd like to go riding again. I won't be "that guy" next time. I'm ordering a trail tool kit and spare tubes today.

:-)Good man mark! If you want, next time I'll let you carry my tool pack and tube so you don't have to spend any money right now. :-)

Looks like y'all had a great day. Excellent pics guys!

My apologies to Roger, who followed me out, for ruining his day. My rear end came around and I followed it into the V right where 4Play got off track on the preride. A boulder jerked the front wheel and I came down funny on my wrist. I felt a crack and it was painful. I figured the quickest way out was back the way we had come in. I'm glad I made the decision as the ride out was no picnic on my wrist. I tried to talk Roger into turning left on Battleax to catch you guys but he wouldn't have it. Truthfully, he was a big help getting my bike loaded, so I'm glad he followed me out. I splinted it when I got home and it doesn't hurt, ....as long as I don't move it!

Naw, I'll get it checked out this week. I'll know in a few days if it's anything bad. It was great to see you out with the crew again! Nice pics.....as usual.

Yep. That's what happens when you're out teaching people to swing straight instead of showing me how to ride!!

So a lot of you probably thought the two old guys went off somewhere to die but that was not the case. We actually dubbed the SxS the Minnow and took a 3 hour tour while putting up all the signs my passenger wanted to get put up on the property. He had a lot of signs. He also insisted on stopping each group on the way out to let them know the Ovens were on private property and was posted so that took sometime also. When we got to the Martinez Canyon turn off, I made the left to go out but I missed the turn off to head back to Superior and we ended up down Box Canyon and Price Rd. My gas gauge was flashing at me so we decided to head to Florence to make sure we had enough to get back. We pulled into Superior at 5:00. My guest passenger was sold completely on the SxS and says he will be out next week to get one. Thanks Buddy for sticking around to make sure we made it back in. When we took off in the morning I totally had a brain fart and left my phone in my truck so I was without Communication. Of course Jim and I will never admit that the two old guys with the most experience in the desert were never lost or confused because after all it was a grand 3 hour tour. Till next time.

You handled a small bore MX bike better than most considering the terrain. Nice to meet you.
