Excellent explanation @Wa Ho Thuk. A long time ago a friend tried to explain this to me and I left the conversation glassy eyed and only remembered the word "Twingle" ha.

Were you there, the dust looked very bad on screen?

Remember when watching something on tv you lose depth of perception at certain camera angles (track level cameras) . While it was dusty, it wasn't as bad as the fanschoice.tv feed made it look. I have been to races that were worse as far as dust is concerned.

Dave knows how hard you can turn XR and get away with it, most of the time. I've heard that other teams were turning them harder than that, but had a lot of failures because of it.

    Thanks Jason .

I grew up around dirt track racers , so had a head start . Unfortunately my own skills as a racer were , er , hmm, well , limited :muutt :-) I have over the years been involved in building a few motors , and helping set a couple of "framers" up for others .

About the twingles , some of the fast Tiumphs and BSA's were set up as twingles , I know that Nixon and Romero raced that configuration on 1/2 mile tracks with success .

As an aside , I am not a regular poster here , but this is a great thread for dirt track freaks , thanks . :clap

    I think you mean 675 degrees? 45 + 675 = 720 (two full revolutions).

Well of course , and while we are at it the 55 % figure was a bit high also . In my defense , the docs have me on some serious meds for a a few days .....

Wait , what were we talking about ???:scratch:snore

I agree it is a great thread, it was the first place I could find any thing on the 2017 races. Tell more about the old days I never knew that about Nixon my "life time herow" and romero.

Right there with ya. I like to think I was a spectacular crasher but even my frequent crashes weren't all that great :lol3

With the end of the Howerton Kawi's, and BRob going to HD, it's hard to think of many. Possibly Davis Fisher, he might be on a Kawi. Vanderkooi, I believe, will be on one too.
EDIT: That's doing a disservice to the majority of the field who were, and will be, running Kawi's. Sorry. I'm betting a big chunk of the field will be still be on Kawi's this coming year.

Along that lines, sounds like Sammy will be on his own Yamaha next year. Judging from a recent Facebook post.

Small gripe here and maybe I am misinterpreting what I read but why are they mandating a standard font for number plates? Number plates have always given the bikes and rider personality. I remember Gary Scott's 5 or Graham's 3 or Romero's 3 for that matter. Those are all iconic plates for fans of the sport. Keen's 10. Odd change. Flattrack will loss a piece of its style and personality.

Let's see if my brain will function properly today ... OK , Nixon stories . This was told to me by Bobby Winters, a pretty good racer from Arkansas , and while it happened at Daytona I still like it . Circa 1967 , during practice for the 200 , Bobby is riding a 500 CC Triumph prepared by him and his dad . The bike is capable of 135 MPH on Daytona gearing . Now Nixon is riding that crazy factory Triumph , not really a production motorcycle , more based on an aborted attempt by Triumph to go GP racing . Nixon's Triumph was capable of 150 plus on the banking , and he is HOT DOGGING it a bit , making sure the other guys know he has a FAST bike . Nixon slips up behind Bobby on his right while he is running WFO , gives him a nice friendly push with his left hand which speeds him up about 5 MPH , then drafts past and gives him a wave . Later in the pits , Winters asked Nixon "why" , Gary replied " I was just feelin' sorry for ya" . :-) Bobby did say it was faster than his own race bike ever traveled . :lol3

Probably to make them easier to see on TV.

I prefer some creativity applied to the numbers but my vote doesn't count.

So , with the new TV deal , does anyone know if fanschoice will still carry the races live ?

You can request your style. Very good color on the background number plates for gnc2 bikes wish they would make them run the same size as the gnc1

There is a bit more to this story . During the next practice , Bobby is once again WFO on the banking , and Nixon drafts up on his right , reaches over and gives himself an assist , slowing Bobby down this time :jack

One more #9 story , and widely told, although maybe anecdotal . A friend of mine who raced in that era swears it is true . During a rider's meeting at the old Sedalia MO mile track , which Nixon had dialed in , he famously stood up on the wall around the track and asked , "Which one of you poor SOB's is gonna finish second tonight?"

OK , maybe one more bit of history re Nixon . He was born in Anadarko Oklahoma , cut his baby teeth racing local dirt tracks out here in the middle , then moved to Baltimore when he was about 16 to race for a Triumph shop there . A friend from another forum , who is also an AMA White Plate holder , raced out of the same shop during the late 60's . Although my friend was actually older than Gary , getting a late start due to spending time in the Navy , he always looked up to Nixon . He tells me that despite #9's predilection for practical jokes , and being a bit of a smartazz , he was s dead serious competitor , and did not suffer fools gladly . I met Gary some years ago , and knowing his history , asked him if some of the stories were true . In his stream of consciousness style , and Okie drawl , he said " Dunno , yeah probably , it was the 60's" . Then he just smiled . He was one of the greatest ever .

I believe I read in one of the interviews or press releases that FansChoice.TV will still stream the races live. Michael Lock recently said they would keep FansChoice.TV streaming for the "hardcore" fans which I think means "all" the fans. :lol2 I really wonder how tape delay showings several days later will work in the age of social media. I could see waiting a few hours to show a race but not a few days.
