I think electric bikes will be huge for MX/SX in the years to come. Not necessarily at the highest levels but across the country. I think a lot of folks have a visceral reaction to loud bikes spewing exhaust (for the folks reading this thread, I bet it's "AWESOME!") and to the extent you can take away one of the primary objections and add just the idea that these are basically like prius bicycles (however true that may or may not be...) I think you're going to end up with fewer courses getting shut down. It doesn't solve the question of liability, but nobody's complaining about downhill MTB courses in the same way they complain about MX tracks and there's definitely a reason for that. Anyway, I'm pretty curious to see how they do.

Dust is a big complaint too

Noise is a big factor but they will always find something to not like about Moto

That is the attitude that has gotten many, many riding areas and tracks shut down. Noise IS the number one issue with motorcycles, street or dirt, and it's the careless, go fuck yourself attitude that goes with it that hurts it even more. There are more of "them" than there are of "us", but people will still continue to be assholes until we won't be able to pull our bikes out of our garages anymore, and THEY will be the one's saying, "let 'em cry".

But that dope FMF pipe makes me so much faster. :fpalm

I love the engines on my bikes, but I love the aspect of silent, or at least less sound. It'll be very cool to see Electric bikes lining up at the gate. Though will there be the conspiracy theories about Honda "killing the electric bike" like they did 2T :lol3

Just like when the 4 strokes took over.

Going to need cards in the spokes though.

MP3 player in the seat console and loudspeaker megafone (where the silencer used to be :evil) with throttle modulated engine sound effects (option to choose between "old skool" 2 stroke sound track :super, or the next gen. thumper base track :dj)... available soon on itunes, in time for season 2020... :norton

I sort of agree, I just think that's a tautology. Once electric bikes win then electric bikes will be the ones that win. So two questions I have are
    1. What technical accomplishments do you think electric bikes need to win, and
    2. How long will it take to get there?

I think I'll feel a little sad about it because I like the sound of the engines, but the idea of a stealth trail bike that doesn't make folks mad is pretty appealing.

MTB's are stealth and folks don't like them either

    Electric bikes won't change much.

Once they get electric MX bikes past the power of a 250,and under the weight of a 500 dualsport, and the batteries last longer and longer, and the price isnt so high.....Maybe they will have something.

There are fast quiet internal combustion bikes available now,the 1st thing guys do is put a loud muffler on them. I rode a 2017 500EXC the other day, muted would be a polite term, has a reed valve between carb and air filter,as quiet as a stock DR 650 at least, but the 500 is fast and light and handles great.

If riders can be made to want quiet bikes a good part of the public's hatred of bikes could be solved.

    2. maybe 5 years? - they could do it now if they really wanted to, all about the $.

The major brands all probably have plans already, just in case someone comes out with a better beast, they'll be semi ready to counter with their version.

RC survived SO many crashes that could have ended any career, something smiled on him and he kept going.
Luck plays a part in racing. Getting badly hurt repeatedly as happened to JS can really be a distraction. Jorge Lorenzo in Moto-Gp is a good example,he plays head games with himself now trying to convince himself the risk is worth the speed on track. Too many banging injurious crashes.

The power is no problem. If the batteries gets more Wh per kg they will take over. 450´s will cry when the e-bikes get batteries to match their amount of fuel/weight wise. Power on demand...thats what electric engines will do all day.
