    I have a carbed 990.

I have been keeping a real close tab on my fuel usage.

Worst = Ultra technical heavy sand, heaps of throttle = 11 mpg
    Best = tar cruising = 39 mpg
Ride like a twat on tar = 25mpg

It's the map, forget everything else you listed, it won't change MPG. When I asked the dealer to put the ACK map in my bike (before TuneECU was available) it took me from 35~40mpg to 25mpg. Go back to the stock map, it will be fine with aftermarket pipes and won't run lean, plus give you far better MPG.

My recommendation, go back to the dealer and ask for stock map, or read up on TuneECU, and load a stock map.

Good advice go the Tune ECU route.

If doing the leaner thing (which you will be heading too) make sure your SAS is blanked off or it will burn the packing out of your mufflers and ruin them.

    Thanks guys...great stuff.

DSM8 ...I agree and just relocated my beloved M Coupe into the driveway to make room for more work on the big twin. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard every time I heard myself say I was going to a dealer for an oil change.

Grinns... thanks a ton for the PM. I'll ping you and head over to the dark side.

Thanks DSM8 also for this info. Might pm you for more info. I'm only a few cities away from you.

I also have a new (to me) 08 990S. 3k miles, Akropovic and gas miles sucks ass. Performance, however, is through the freaking roof. Bike tells me to haul ass or get off. After topping off the fuel, I got about 120 miles before the fuel light came on. Granted, I'm in the mountains, but I thought I would get better mileage. Bike was worked on at Eric's in Pasadena, but, he retired and moved and I don't know where Brett went. I'll keep an eye on this post for more info.

Yep. The cookie cutter performance maps all seem to be around 25 mpg. Stock map will work just fine.

Only chance I get to ride it is a 4 mile commute each way each day.

Lucky if I get 75 miles a tank. Crazy I know.

Cleaned the MAP Sensor, it did nothing for MPG. Going back to stock map.

Sorry for the revival here, but better than starting a new thread:

    2013 990
    Stock map
    Akras
    Stock gearing (16x42) 80mph=5000rpm
    700 miles on odo

My rides are pretty much 50/50 slab/dirt and I cruise the hwy at 80.

I'm getting 28 mpg. Not cool.

Will this get better with more break in? What mileage did you all start seeing better mpg?

    Thx for any help

I have an 07 990 with 16 - 42 gearing that had twin Akras and the Akra map and got 25mpg. Was like being strapped to a rocket.

I went to a 2 into 1 with single Akra and the stock map and added an Advtank.
8 gallon capacity and 35 mpg. Still plenty of grin factor.

I added a Rottweiler filter and went the TuneECU route and the mapping improved throttle response. Mileage is slightly better in the high 30's. I could get better mileage with less throttle.

I'm pretty happy but switched to 17-45 and need to reread the Tune ECU thread again to stay up to date.

No. break in will not improve MPG any.

You should start playing with maps / reading the TuneECU thread. Dealer won't really be much help.

No disrrspect, but I don't think you behave that well... 5000 rpm????

    I have a 2011 990 dakar. FMF q4 stock map, 17t sprocket.

Non of these mods have done mayor changes on my mpg's. The only thing that kills my mpg's is my right wrist.. Disregarding mods, stock or FMF with or without spark arrestor. 16 or 17 teeth sprocket... If I keep the bike below 5000 rpm I wil get >40 mpg, solid.. Hoologan riding style? I drop my mpg to 30 or less

Granted, the bike is more fun above 5000rpm:evil

Ummmmm, nooooooo. I'm keeping it at or below 5000 rpm which is 80 mph on my bike at 16-42. I don't want to cruise any faster cuz its just not fun to fight the wind any faster than that.

    Unless my tach is wrong.

I just loaded the Akra map from TuneEcu, I have 06 990 with Akra pipes, everything else stock.
Got 15 kpl or 42 mpg on the weekend riding shall we say briskly. Often 130kph and about 80ks of town stuff. 218 ks when light came on.
Well impressed with how it runs now. Throttle Tamer 400 evens out the initial jerk.
    Love it !

I have just got 42.5 mpg riding at 120kph on the motorway with full Gobies ,top box and full tank bag on my 990 ,akra pipes. Rotty air filter and custom tune .With the 16t sprocket. Though a fair bit less when you use the bike properly .

Your tach is ok.. You should be ~80mph @5000 rpm with the 16-42 teeth setup.

1.- are you sure your dealer didn't load up any custom (akra, etc) map?

2.- have you ever done the 15 min idle magic trick?
