Thanks Bob. Another anniversary coming up soon. Would have linked this report to my new one, but I don't know how. Black Rock is awesome, and closer to home. We went again in August. :D

    Hi,

I plan to ride from the Phoenix area up #395 as far as Susanville and then cut over to Eureka to ride down the coast. Can you tell me if you would take #44 or #36 over to Eureka? I'm trying to get a couple of opinions about this.

    Thanks,

    Gary

Hi Gary. When you get to Susanville keep going all the way through town. Main Street/HWY 36 is the same. Few gas options between Susanville and Red Bluff. Definitely take HWY 36 all the way across to the coast. It is a beautiful ride, no gas from Red Bluff to Fortuna. We have taken both routes and I liked HWY 36 better. Eureka is a bit north up HWY 101. If you have extra time when you begin heading south, take Mattole Rd along the coast from Fortuna/Ferndale and meet back up with 101. Have a great trip. :D

The Black Rock is a long way from NY!!! There is something about the Playa that draws adventurers back again. I too love the hot springs!! Have fun in May. :D

Just read the whole thread .... what a great area to ride, thanks heaps.

Looking at the area on Google Earth, difficult to see exactly "what" Black Rock City is ... so "planned" ... any clues and pics?

    Love your work.

Hi french horn. Thanks for checking out the report. Unless Google photographs the playa during September, Black Rock City will never be visible.
This is a description of the Burning Man Festival:

"Once a year, tens of thousands of participants gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever."

I have seen a few reports on ADV from inside the city. I do not have any bookmarks to them, but I bet if you search a bit, they will satisfy your curiosity. :D

Great report once again! Read your Death Valley one a while back.

What sleeping pads did you upgrade to? The is something I am looking to upgrade as well and just looked at some of the Exped and Big Agnes.

What other gear changes did you make?

Cool write up... A two up ride not for the faint of heart. Glad no one was hurt. There's great riding out there for sure!

Very cool report. My riding buddy / best friend / wife and I were married 29 years ago and just started riding off road last year. We're hooked, and that's after 250k miles pillion for Susan and twice that up front for me on swoopy pavement. We've been fast, and it was fun, but off road is just so much more relaxing. And a bag mount is a lot cheaper than a helicopter, but that's a story for another day. Keep posting your reports !!
