It's good that you mention the heat. Folks need to be aware that even here, it does get hot. And because of cattle, I wouldn't count on drinking the water of the Sweetwater.

Well, after a summer riding break I decided to try and finish this report so here is Day 8 Aug 28

Day 8 would see us riding across more big vast emptiness of Wyoming through oil and gas fields, chasing more Pronghorn and wild horses, our first flat in Wamsutter, visiting Aspen Alley, torrential rains and hail on Battle Pass, and ending up mercifully in Encampment, Wyoming. The distance was just over 200 miles.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
After rising and shining near South Pass/Atlantic City, we headed further East on the big open empty plains.
This is the Big empty &#8211; no trees, or water, just vast open desert.
<o:p>The roads were fast so we made good time. Here is a sample video of the fast roads<o:p></o:p>
<IFRAME height=480 src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wHAdt6BdF4c" frameBorder=0 width=640 allowfullscreen></IFRAME>
This is also oil and gas country and we saw numerous oil pumps extracting the black juice in their slow head bobbing rhythms.
<o:p>This looked like a giant balloon &#8211; so it must be filled with gas!
<o:p>Jeremy on the open road ahead!
<o:p>Then Jeremy spots a bunch of wild horses racing around</o:p>
<o:p>[IMG]</o:p>
<o:p>Meanwhile Paul and Jill meet up with some racing Pronghorn &#8211; lots of fast animals in this area &#8211; I guess you need to be fast if there are no trees for cover</o:p>
<o:p>[IMG]</o:p>
<o:p>We were fast too &#8211; as you can see from the dust tails
[IMG]
<o:p>Mike and Jeremy in the distance taking a short break</o:p>
<o:p>[IMG]</o:p>
<o:p>At about noon time we reach Wamsutter,
[IMG]
<o:p>and our first flat &#8211; on Paul/Jills rear tire. Lucky we were at a gas station which is a good place to have a flat if you get one.

<o:p>Boy, for a guy who has to fix a flat Paul sure seems happy!<o:p></o:p>
We found the puncture &#8211; he picked up a rusty old nail.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>After we fixed the flat we checked out Jeremy&#8217;s arm &#8211; he had this nasty swollen bump from an insect bite &#8211; yikes! Visions of Ewen MacGregor on the Long Way Round.

It was time for food so we went to the local Mexican restaurant next door.
<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
It was pretty good plus it was nice and cool inside after sweating fixing that tire. Just ask Paul what he thought!<o:p></o:p>

One last trip to the restroom for a pit-stop and to restock the Horny Goat Weed.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>After lunch we came outside and noticed a few drops of rain &#8211; hmm could be a sign of things to come.

<o:p>So we hit the road which was a bit of pavement between Wamsutter and Rawlins.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Highway roads are boring so we took some action shots on the road.<o:p></o:p>
It took several tries to get a few good ones of Paul/Jill<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>And Mike

Hmm more rain headed our way

<o:p>But as our luck turned out we just had light sprinkles as we reached the town of Rawlins

<o:p>Some interesting rock formations in the middle of town <o:p></o:p>
After a brief stop we headed on a dirt road South into the Medince Bow forest<o:p></o:p>

We had this huge vista while riding on the edge of a big hill.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>Eventually we reach a famous spot on the Continental Divide trail &#8211; Aspen Alley

<o:p>Paul and Jill, Watch out for the leaned over tree!

<o:p>Looking up through the tree tops

<o:p>On the other side

<o:p>Once we got through it was looking mighty dark and ominous!

<o:p>We had to get to Encampment and it was in the direction of the darkest part of the sky.

<o:p>So we headed out and hoped for the best. But the best it would not be as we had to gain elevation to reach Encampment and the skys opened up with rain.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>At first it wasn&#8217;t too bad but we could see lightning in the hillsides and as we continued to climb the rain turned to hail.<o:p></o:p>
By the time we reached the top of Battle Pass the hail was pelting us really hard to the point of wanting to jump off the bikes.
Our clothes were soaked, it was pretty cold, we could hardly see where we were going, and the hail actually hurt as it nailed us on our exposed arms and thighs.<o:p></o:p>
I took a quick pic at the top of Battle Pass but we just wanted to get the heck out of there! <o:p></o:p>

We finally reached Encampment and tried to find a hotel as soon as possible to get out of the foul weather.<o:p></o:p>
We found one called Vachers Big Horn Lodge<o:p></o:p>

</o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p></o:p><o:p>Paul was mighty happy we weren&#8217;t camping that night!

<o:p>There was a whole lot of water coming out of my boots

<o:p>It was awesome to take the cold wet clothes off and get into dry ones. The hotel people really helped us out but letting us use their dryer and hair dryers to dry out clothes and boots.

<o:p>We had a nice home cooked meal of pasta in sauce thanks to Paul and Jill, and talked about the days adventures and passed out pretty quickly after that.
Preview to Day 9 - nice forests, a big detour, entering Colourful Colorado, and an awesome campground.<o:p></o:p>

I started reading this from the get go.. We (5 of us) did a week out west last month covering much of the same ground. It's fantastic out there. I wish we were still riding, ha.. Does that feeling of wanting to be back there ever go away..

Thanks for finishing the RR!

Day 9 would be about 230 miles due to a local road closure. The intended route was suppose to take us South of Encampment/Riverside on Blackhill road and pass by<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
Hog Park dam. Unfortunately the road past Hog Park Dam was closed due to construction (as of Aug 29, 2011 - this might be different now - plaese check local road conditions if heading this way). We were’nt sure about the correct way to route around so we ended up<o:p></o:p>
retracing to Encampent/Riverside and taking hwy 125 East and South to Hwy 14 South and then Hwy 40 West to Hayden. This took us through Steamboat Springs and<o:p></o:p>
got us to the Chapman campground West of Yampa quicker since we had lost a bunch of time with the backtracking.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
The rains had cleared away and the sky was a bit cloudy but decent so we were enthused about the day after our damp end to the previous one.<o:p></o:p>
We had a good breakfast at the Bear Trap Café
[IMG]
and gassed up in Riverside
[IMG]

We had some nice scenic views off Blackhill road
[IMG]

We ran into Purgatory gultch – sounded like a bad place so did not stay long.
<o:p></o:p>
It wasn’t too long after this we ran into our Hog Dam Road closure. We backtracked back to Riverside which wasn’t a bad thing since this was such a nice road to ride.

Was saw some interesting rocky outcrops along the highway South of Riverside
[IMG]
Closer looks exposed some choice hiding spots
[IMG]

Then we reached the Colorado border – have’nt seen a snowplow sign for a long time!

So we headed South Hwy 125 and then West on Hwy 14 and West on Hwy 40 through Routt forest
[IMG]

Saw several farms and ranches along the way.

And skihills – now we were getting close to the winter resort town of Steamboat Springs
[IMG]
And we were greeted with a full rainbow

<o:p>We were hungry and decided to stop in Steamboat for an early dinner.</o:p>

We stopped at a Mexican restaurant called Fiesta Jalisco - the food was great<o:p></o:p>

The Interior was just as impressive

<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>After the meal we hit the road and headed further East towards Hayden .<o:p></o:p>
Some more nice farm country
<o:p></o:p>

We spotted a train and had a race!

At one point we spotted these strange rocky bumps

<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>Anyways we kept on going until we hit Hayden, and then turned South on some more dirt – yeah!</o:p>
<o:p>[IMG]

And passed by this overlooking cliff face

<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>Looks like some Hoodoos in there</o:p>

<o:p>At this point we reached Oak Creek and Paul/Jill and I wanted to camp and Jeremy wanted to hotel it.<o:p></o:p>
So Paul/Jill and I went off to Chapman Reservoir campground and Jeremy stayed at a local hotel.<o:p></o:p>
We would meet up at Peggy’s Diner in Yampa in the morning.<o:p></o:p>
The road to Chapman Reservoir was nicely forested.

<o:p></o:p>
What a perfect spot. There was hardly anyone there, it was quiet, and very picturesque

Good stuff.. Fun to see the pics.
Just curious, how was the service at Peggy's Diner? We ate there twice, at day 1 and at day 8.. The food was great, but they were in no hurry to get us anything.. I remember begging for coffee, with a reply, "I know you're there." :cry

Looking forward to your impressions of Echo Park Canyon, and see if you took the big downhill the next day 2 up?:eek1

Yes the service was a bit slow but they were friendly and food was good. We have a few pics.

I think we were served by a male waiter.

The downhill will come up in the next days report.

Jeremy stayed in a hotel in Oakdale and Paul/Jill and I stayed in the campground at Chapman reservoir.<o:p></o:p>
We met in the town of Yampa &#8220;Gateway to the Flattops&#8221; (mountains not the haircut) the next morning and had a great breakfast at Peggy&#8217;s diner in Yampa <o:p></o:p>

Glad to see the journey resume!

Regarding the Meeker Hotel: The lobby and cafe are appealing, but the rooms themselves upstairs are in bad shape ... very run down and even dirty. I've stayed there twice over the years. Seems not much has been done to maintain and upgrade it as a lodging since Teddy Roosevelt's day. I don't recommend it for an overnight stay.

Ah...yes, the Meeker Hotel. Great place to stop for lunch and lots of history to enjoy while there. Not a very technical day of riding, but the next day sure made up for it. Dinosaur Monument, here we come :evil A few more pics of this day...
