saturday big bike ride - furnace creek wash road - dante's view - furnace creek - artist's pallette - westside road -shoshone
    total miles - 230

long stretch of highway is easy pickin for the big bikes

    biggie on the SE

having a traction control made the dash through deep gravel and sand very manageable

    gas prices at furnace creek

we were moving along great then all of the sudden, no sign of the boys. then came this rider with a message.

good thing i only have to backtrack about a mile and dave already plugging up the rear. yeah, the benefit of having a tubeless!

damn eric, the pair you have is huge
    [IMG]

    apparently, no traction control available
    [IMG]

stopped in shoshone for a late lunch and the gas prices
    [IMG]

then out of nowhere peter joined us

Sunday morning, I again had my usual breakfast of instant stuff. Took my time packing up. Like attempting to repack a stereo set up back in the day it all didn't fit back inside the boxes. :imaposer
Good thing I won that 20 liter dry bag. That came in handy.

I had a choice to make. I could just ride back home, or I could ride someplace and camp. Where I really wanted to go the weather said it would be cold. :vardy
Nope, I want to be warm.
So, I decided to try Joshua Tree. So, to Baker.
I stopped on the way for a photo of the dust swept into the corners of California.

I headed south from Baker to Kelso,

I was chilly so I stopped someplace and added a layer I would later remove at Amboy.:lol3

Stopping at Amboy for the mandatory shot of Roy's, I was surrounded by tourists clicking away at me and the sexy beast 990R. :clap
They were using some real fancy gear for snapshots. I saw some big buck DSLR with lots of $$$$ glass.

Once they filled their cards I was able to get a shot of the bike alone.

I got to Joshua Tree only to find another crowd of tourists. But, there is a coffee shop right next to the Visitor center so I sat there and called home. Lots of wind down here and lots of people. One ranger said there was likely no open camp sites. Another said I could ride through and check if anything was open, but my preferred sites were of course definitely full. I decided I would brave the wind and head home.
I've camped out there in the wind before and it wasn't any fun. Trying to take starry night shots in a gale is real hard with a tiny, near weightless tripod. So, home is where we set sail for.
Sail being the operative word. Man, it was blowing as I got close to I-10. I got home in time for a quick change and walk with my wife along the beach for sunset.
869 miles I think is what I landed on for a total. Great fun, next time I'm leaving a couple of days earlier and wandering more after.
Gear and bike worked great. I like the Golden Tyre 723's fine. They may be louder than TKC80's, but maybe wear better. The front still looks new. The rear has worn in the middle a bit and now hooks up on pavement so power wheelies are back. :clap
The Klim Latitude jacket is perfect for me. The medium is a bit loose these days thanks to no cube time and more time on my bicycle. The Traverse pants were great. I opened the back vents on Saturday when it got warm and I was fine. I've had these pants for three or four years and this trip discovered the key loop in the right hand pocket. :lol3
The Sidi Crossfires are several years old, and feel like slippers for me. Very comfortable, warm and dry.

This showed up this morning so I'll be pulling the bike apart tomorrow.

Again, Joel thank you so much for all the work putting this great rally together. And to all the volunteers and ride leaders. Thank you all.
Next year I hope I can ride a lot more. Maybe take the Jimmy class again and wander off into the wilderness a bit more.
    :clap

He had a final drive swap at a dealer while the bike was in Alaska - evidently the caliper bolts were not tightened/torqued enough and came loose on the road, the caliper lifted up and into the spokes and zipped them right off on the right side. Left side can't hold the weight, so they snapped.

Wheel lodged and he was able to ride out the slide 1/4 mile or less and went over into a slight ditch at 1mph and stopped. Luckily he was unscathed and the wheel held the brake rotor off the ground.

He was able to source a loaner wheel from none other than the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Jimmy Lewis. I forgot he was stationed in Pahrump all the time. He was at the rally too., and got back a day later than rider arrived in town in a uhaul with the bike in the back. He is now continuing his journey home to PA.

Hi Julie, if you can get my ship pics out of the Pahrump SmugMug thingy, #561 and #562, you could load the ship pics to the forum. I don't have the skills. Am from the lead pencil era

nice job todd salvaging that ride and seems a lot of fun too. remember, you're never lost until you're out of gas.

4 of us were on the same route too that friday and we could not find the dirt road that cut across from tecopa road.

Ya.. it was quite a day. @HBSURFDAD got the last laugh. After getting his bike stuck in sand, he found the correct trail to PS. The trail we took was quite mellow and 9 miles off track. No one in my group complained though. Great group of people.
