The ride along the river was pretty amazing. Every time I'd stop to snap a picture or two I would think to myself... does it get any better than this? Then I'd put my camera away, get back on the bike and make it a 1/2 mile and BAM!!! I'd be like... man I gotta get a picture of this!

I hit HWY62 and started to climb out of the river valley and thought to myself it was kind of a bummer to be leaving that... a few miles later I rounded a bend in the road and then...
    P1010534.JPG
instead of the aspens being contained in the bottom of the river valley, they just spread out....

Got back on the bike and then....
    KIMG0413.JPG
Snow capped peaks appeared in the distance. There's cow's grazing in the pasture, golden aspens with snow covered peaks in the distance. Mind officially blown... I spent a few minutes here taking it all in. Got back on my bike and a couple miles later.... you guessed it... it just got better. KIMG0415.JPG
Again... a picture with your phone just doesn't quite do justice... It was amazing... P1010551.JPG

From there I dropped in to Ridgeway where I'd hit HWY550 South. They call it the "Million Dollar Highway". If you google it there's some pretty amazing photos... better than what I can do with my pocket camera and a story of how it came to have that name.

    Here's Ridgeway... P1010555.JPG
Rounded the corner at the bottom of the hill and it was official... I was now on the "Million Dollar Highway" P1010560.JPG
This was about as far North as I would be on my trip... all South from here...

    Between Ridgeway and Ouray P1010561.JPG
Ouray is cool little town tucked in the valley P1010564.JPG
I was doing the yo-yo with the couple on that cruiser you see coming up the road. I had caught up to them shortly after I left Norwood and they'd stop, I'd pass, stop, they'd pass, stop, I'd pass, stop, they'd pass... it was kinda funny. All the way through to Durango. I know they had a Texas plate, maybe they're fellow inmates?? Never know!

Thanks! The trip was too good to keep to myself.

And the plate... My buddy got a plate "GTLST" I thought it would be funny when we rode together to pass somebody and they'd see GTLST, then IMLST... and I tried to get another buddy to get FOUND. I didn't get the full buy in there. But I tried!!!!

So far the Million Dollar Highway was living up to it's reputation... P1010574.JPG
As the elevation increased... the leaves had already fallen... P1010580.JPG
Somewhere past the 10,000 ft mark was a pullout...

P1010592.JPG Down the hill from there I would pass the outskirts of Silverton. The highway doesn't pass through town, just skims past the edge, I chose to press on rather than go in to town. I was not getting anywhere fast and I had a pretty ambitious day planned so I just stopped for an obligatory look back picture as I climbed out of town toward Molas Pass

Shortly after this I rolled in to Durango for a splash of gas, bathroom break and a refill of my hydration bladder. As I was tending to that business, my yo-yo cruiser friends passed me for the last time. Safe travels...

I have to say, the Million Dollar Highway was worth every penny... especially since I got a hell of a deal. I made it through for a mere $5.81 KIMG0443.JPG
as I left Durango I began to climb out of the Animas river valley

I was in that neck of the woods in '15. Certainly is awesome scenery. You should try Last Dollar Road if it's not raining.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Looks like a fun road trip. I'm hoping to do something similar in July next year. Leaving Phoenix will be painful due to the heat, but once in higher elevation should be nice.

Just a little Panasonic digital and my phone. I'll have to figure out a way to pack my DSLR and get serious about the photography part. But for now it's working.

I'm usually subscribed to the latter... begging forgiveness.

    Let's see.... where was I??

A look back over my shoulder as I was leaving Durango behind.
    P1010621.JPG
I crossed in to New Mexico, making my 4th state of the journey KIMG0445.JPG
I'd pass through Farmington and catch HWY371 South. I got a splash of gas and was just a few miles out of town when I couldn't figure out why my right hip felt cold. I checked the vent zippers on my pants and they were closed... it went away after 10-15 minutes so I didn't pay too much mind.

About 30-40 miles later I stopped to take a couple pictures of an area that looks like moonscape, smelled like gas... Duh, forgot to close my gas cap in Farmington. The splash was cooling off my right hip.
