Roadtrip into 21 states and 2 provinces on the old relic affectionately known as "The Pig" I'll kick off the RR with a little ADVrider salute to Michigan....Wife is a Buckeye fan from Ohio so I couldn't resist taking her straight to the stadium in Ann Arbor. :evil Then it was on to the U.P. The center section of the bridge was a work zone with the "solid" outer lanes closed....Boy, that sure is a wiggly grate in the center.:eek1

Edit: all pics were originally set as attachments in this report. My intention is to update it with pics from my smugmug as those old attachments can no longer be seen....I fear that they may be lost forever.

O.K. this ride started on Aug 20th with a semi-annual shave. That may have been bad luck cause we started by riding striaght into thunder storms in the AVL and TYS area......but thankfully that was the most rain of the whole 3wk trip.:D From home to in-laws in OH 500mi
    Day 2 relax :huh
    Day 3 600mi into UP
Day 4 <500mi to my folks in MN
    Day 5 rest...again?:huh
Day 6 across MN, ND and to Miles city, MT

I've not seen one of those in a long time. I use to have a 78 XS1100(Green) man that was a great bike zippy too! the wife and I rode all over Idaho, western Montana and through Yellowstone/Teton on that thing in the early eighties and never caused us any grief.

    Keep it up

I saw a rather nice one of these up at Alice's (SF Bay Area) last Saturday.

    I had 1979 xs750, stolen in 1980.
I replaced it with a 1980 xs850, which I then rode across teh US and back.
Always wished I had poped for the xs11!

    Keep riding!

Well how much is there to take a pic of crossing the Dakotas? We did happen to see Paul Bunyan in MN before he stole them boys' pick-up.:lol3 stopped for a little dino-rodeo practice. Oh yeah how do I look on a chopper? The kids all belong to my lil' sister....the biggest one low-sised the chopper in some sand and got all scraped up later that day:rofl

Cool! I'm the 4th owner of this bike....I bought it in '90...the original owner dressed it and had a sidecar, also pulled a camper.

Now here's where the fun begins:D 8/26/06 headed to Red Lodge then over the Bear Tooth Pass into Yellowstone NP. The initial climb up the Bear Tooth was a bit hairy as it was freshly chip-n-sealed and I managed to get a bit loose one time in a switch-back. All was good though:wink:

    First sign of trouble.:eek1
When we were planning this trip a lot of people asked if I thought this old bike would make it. I would just say "I don't know....but I hope so"
Well Sun am as I was packing the bike in Deer Lodge, MT i noticed that the rear tire was litterally splitting apart and ready to fly to pieces!:eek1 :eek1
If you can see the crack in the tire pic down in the tread groove...well the whole tire was full of 'em!! Sunday and the only dealer open is the HD dealer in Missoula...80mi away. So we decide to EASE on down the road. The folks at the HD place were very helpful and went out of their way to try and help us but the only 17" tires they had were low-profile fronts:cry

Short story longer.....A big THANK YOU to the people at Big Sky BMW for leaving their trash in the alley.....found a Metzler with some tread on it the exact size.....so off to Costco to find some shade and air support. Made it to Kalispell/Whitefish that afternoon.:D

This young guy on the old Honda Shadow with home-made wood luggage rack had been on the road for a month at this point...been up to Alaska and back and was doing a 49 state ride of a life-time....He called his rig "The Kentucky Special"

They actually let us into Canada after a brief search of the saddle bags and trunk! Waterton Lakes then up to High River for the night.

Tues am the weather was begining to show signs of change...but we managed to escape any serious rain and had a good day in the Canadian Rockies!:D
We by-passed Calgary taking hwy 40 over the Highwood Pass and thru Kananaskis country and made it to Banff and ate lunch on a balcony over-looking the town.

    nice pics!!!

former 1100 special owner here. between the first owner,my dad and myself that poor bike logged some serious miles. it lugged around a sidecar for 100,000 miles plus some. i got $350 for it with 330,000 miles on the clock, it left a nice blue smoke screen as it rode away from my house.
