Looks like fun restoring a XL600. Mine already has the rebuilt engine, I just need new fenders and one of those so called 3 day weekends to tear it down, paint it and put it back together. Not happening soon, work has been heavy and I only get 1 day off.
What condition is your tank in internally? I have a tank that has no dents and slight rust for cheap to an ADVer. My current tank is dinged up, but with no rust inside at all. thats why I don't use the better looking spare =)
I have an aftermarket plastic tank. Also, it looks like I am picking up an 84 xl600r on Sunday. I am trading my converted xr200r + some cash for it. This one is in perfect running condition. This means I will have the one I am restoring with modifications and one that is stock to compare as well as a reference for putting the 83 back together ...
The trade didn't workout for the '84. I have been running out of time on this rebuild so my uncle is helping me out. He tore down the motor this last weekend and sent me a list of parts. I am having a hard time find a couple after checking Bike Bandit, Amazon, Ebay & XRs only. Does anyone know where to find a "Crank Pickup"? I am working on getting a better description as I am not sure what he is referring to.

You guys were right, pulse generator. Now I found out I ordered the wrong camshaft because the right one is not available. I got a xr600/xl650 cam from xrsonly because I did not read the description . Anyone have experience with converting to use this camshaft?
No, a later model camshaft won't work. Nor is it realistic to change the entire cylinder head and intake to make that cam work.
If you're still using the original stator, just order a Ricky Stator now. The oem stators all fail eventually, which is often misdiagnosed as problems with other ignition parts or as a carburettion issue.
