Hi everybody! I'm reviving my Southern Utah ride thread, now with more details!

    The Route:
    <IFRAME title="9 Big Bike-Friendly Days in Southern Utah" height=600 src="http://www.dualsportmaps.com/embedMap.html?id=102893" width=800></IFRAME>

The idea behind this ride is to give Southern Utah the time it deserves. I have picked a collection of routes that showcase some of the best terrain and sights this area has to offer. I've organized the days to allow riders to hop in mid-trip and still have an amazing experience. This is not going to be a hardcore off road dash across the state, rather a slow and steady absorption of the region.

Day 1 - Saturday, May 26: San Diego to Williams, AZ - 480 miles of superslab
Day 2 - Sunday, May 27: Williams to Valley of the Gods - 250 miles, camping in the valley or at Natural Bridges (another 40 miles)
Day 3 - Monday, May 28: Explore (hike) Natural Bridges
Day 4 - Tuesday, May 29: Valley of the Gods or Natural Bridges National Monument to Bryce Canyon - 200 miles, camping in Bryce
Day 5 - Wednesday, May 30 (Mid-week meetup): Explore Bryce
Day 6 - Thursday, May 24: Explore Escalante area (maybe try Hole In The Rock Trail)
Day 7 - Friday, May 31: Bryce to Zion and explore Zion Mesa - 93 miles
Day 8 - Saturday, June 1: Zion to Las Vegas - 170 miles, stay in a hotel and explore Red Rock Canyon
Day 9 - Sunday, June 2: Las Vegas to San Diego

I'm still figuring out all of the camping options and tweaking the route. I want to see Capitol Reef, so I may modify the route to squeeze it in after the Burr Trail.

:ear I'd probably be in for a portion of this if your start date was 6 days later so I could take advantage of Memorial Day. Love Valley of the Gods. Camping out there is a mighty [and fine] experience. But alas, it's your trip and your dates :thumb I'll keep an eye on the thread to see how it develops.

blake, i would like to think that i can join you on this one. if the buyer of my big ktm backs out, i'm IN. i was thinking of doing the toroweap/south utah on that same time frame, but your route encompasses greater distances and awesome places to see.

it was a pleasure riding with you and the other guys last weekend. as a ride leader, you showed the skills to keep the group together and have fun.

Time permitting, this is definitely something I'm going to keep my eyes on. Hard to know right now if I'd be able to get the days off, but if so, this sounds like a lot of fun.

I was contemplating those dates, but I decided to end the trip on Memorial Day weekend to have a recovery day. If kicking the trip off a weekend later works for more of you, I have no problem changing the dates. Let me know.

I wish! May is going to be insane at work. Nevertheless, I'm open to moving the trip.

If your interested in some riding around Prescott AZ on your way up I can show you around. If you plan on riding 89 north to 40 theres a nice cutoff thru the nat. forest that comes out in Williams. Have done Zion and Bryce and its nice. Planning a Moab, Colorado run in June or I might of tagged along....

I'd love to have you along. Keep us posted.

As for the dates, does everybody want me to push the ride back a week so that we are starting on Memorial Day weekend?

I've secured June 2-7 (half of June 1 too if need be), so if the ride ends up being then I'll come along for as long as that time frame will take me. Since I've done Zion and Bryce a couple of times I will likely skip at least Zion. Joel's sold the 950 so I doubt he's in anymore.

Also, a heads-up for anyone coming along that (like me) is a bit vertically challenged: Hall's Crossing can be an adventure in and of itself :evil The ramp down to the ferry is STEEP. I remember parking my 990 on that down slope and barely being able to get on and take off once it was time to load up the ferry :lol3

Note: I have officially changed the dates to May 26 - June 2, 2012. These dates utilize the Memorial Day Holiday.

Just home to the states and wish I could ride w/you guys but won't have enough time off. Riding Utah is on my list of "do's" as I ski/mtb there all the time and love it's grandness. Safe but not un-eventful travels! :D

See you on the SD Backcountry Ride!:clap

I think a few of you are planning to ride with us next weekend, so let's take a few minutes around the camp fire to talk about this trip. I have been reading up on the area and there are quite a few worthwhile diversions throughout the route, so I am considering modifying the timing to allow us to spend a day riding out and exploring a few more areas. Escalante or Boulder would make a nice home base for a few days in order to explore Capitol Reef, Hole In The Rock and Hell's Backbone.

If you're not coming to the San Diego Backcountry Adventure, I'll try to set up a coffee day for everyone to meet and talk about the ride.
