'93 Airhead Timing

    Is the “timing box” listed in the Clymer’s manual the only way to set static timing on a ’93 Airhead? I recall a post on building one for an Oilhead, anyone no if this would work on an Airhead? I have searched the maintenance threads here, no talk of the “timing box”.

    There's been a lot of talk lately about static timing air-cooleds. I have never bothered static-timing a bike with electronic ignition. Slip the bean can in place and set it in a location where it is almost certainly retarded. Start the motor and set the timing with a strobe light.

    Hi,

    you are probably referring to this unit, but I agree with bmwrench ... before removing the "bean can" from the bike I merely mark its position. After reassembly I just start, then adjust timing with a strobe light.

    I had to time my dual plugs G/S recently after fitting a Boyer ignition, and both the rev counter and strobe were out for lunch - so I set it by trial and error up a long and steep hill.

    Ended up around 26 degrees full advance, a bit less than what others find.

    But then , the unleaded that is around now burns a good bit faster than the leaded premium that was around when the bike was made so maybe I shouldn't be too surprised.
