This is one of my favorite overlooks
Stopped to take a break up around craggy gardens
I always run into bear hunters in October... or Barr huntings as they say down there. They are tracking their dogs.
It's amazing the variation in the foliage on this trip. From still green to peak to brown-past peak.
I camped at Doughton Park on the way back. There were only 3 of us in this section of the camping area. I guess it gets busy in the summer, but is always close to empty when I have been there.
Lot's of deer in the camping area
Made my first visit to the Blue Ridge Music Center
Last pictures of the trip at Otter Lake.
I am usually always trying out some new piece of gear.
For this trip I tried out the LD Comfort shorts. I can say they really made a difference in comfort and would definitely recommend them.
Just read a bit of sad news. It looks like Peaks of Otter lodge is now closed. The store at Otter Creak has been closed a few years now and this year the store/restaurant at Doughton park was closed. I couldn't understand why no one is opening them up, but this article sheds some light on that:
Stinks. I got married there in 94 and was planning on spending our 20th at the Peaks. Sign of the times I guess. At least the Parkway is still open.
I did the round in August '09.
Stopped to eat at the Peaks of Otter lodge in 2010. It was a bit too pricey for my blood (KLR rider here).
This RR of yours reminds me I didn't make it to the BRP this year and I live fairly close to its northern begining. Maybe next year.
Perhaps they will get something worked out before your anniversary.
The 1.7 million fee they have to pay to the old occupant seems like a deal breaker on a property that makes 2 mil a year...kind of hard to make a profit. the only person thats good for is the person that gave up the lease.
I agree the lodges are pricey, but it's nice to have the option. I stayed a Mt. Pisgah a few years ago after arriving after dark and in a thick fog. We did some price haggling and it was nice not having to drive down off the mountain in that fog.
