Good job rockinrog. I enjoyed every bit of this report. Your not far from me. I am in Frederick, MD. Been on the BRP a couple times and Skyline. The route can not be beat on east coast. Except I here Rt6 in Scranton,PA is a good ride to the Grand Canyon.
Glad to see you made it to the D-Day Memorial!!!
I think it's one of those lesser known places, not in or near a large city, and probably doesn't get near the attention it deserves.
Like the men it honors....
Thanks for posting the pics.
peaks of otter lodge opened the weekend I was down. I was told they now have tv and Internet in the rooms.
I stayed down in Bedford at a Super 8 to save some $$ and it was close to the D Day Memorial.
The second night I camped at Julian Price Park. They have been having lots of hard storms and the campground showed it. I found a nice high spot close to the facilities.
I think there were 3 campers in the upper campground. The tent proved itself waterproof as it poured around 3 AM.
The campground is full of rhododendron.
The town of Blowing Rock is not far from the campground and has quite a few restaurants etc.
Next stop Linville Falls. I had been there before, but never hiked to the falls.
They have been having quite a bit of rain so there was lots of water going over the falls.
I hiked up to the overlook to get a view from above the falls.

I finally walked up to the top of Mount Mitchell:
A few of the Parkway when the fog parted:
Apparently Mr. Mitchell is buried here:
I got to Cherokee NC in time to catch the evening show at Unto These Hills:
The next day I visited the museum:
It has some nice exhibits including this little computer generated:
