I had a close encounter with the pavement two weeks ago, precipitated by a blue haired cager pulling a classic left turn into my path. This as we were leaving for a week in Baja...:huh

I'm back from Baja, and the insurance man wants to give me a check for the scraped up bits. I have one Gobi that was scraped and punctured. I'm either looking for a Right side bag, or contemplating going with a new set up.

Anyone replaced thier stock bags with some aluminum alternatives?
    Tell me about it!

I’m considering the KTM factory aluminum cases. I believe they’re made by Tourtech (Zega) and come in 35 or 41 litter sizes. They also fit the Gobi mounts, which is a real plus. The Gobis are nice, especially since KTM threw them into the deal but you lose a lot of storage to the double wall construction.
Here they both are for comparison.

but I 'm glad to hear your ok George...I went with Jesse's for most trips but will also use a Wolfman Beta bag with I know I going off road- the jesse rack support the lower part of the beta bag (keeping it off the cans)

Is there any info on the weight differances? The problem I have had with the plastic ones is that the latch has a weak point and after 3000+ miles of Baja washboard roads they have both broke off. However; it is not imposable for the aluminum box to pop off ether. I know a guy that lost one on a trail, never to be found again.

Go to the website below. Look at the SWMotech mounts. I think you can pretty much mount any of the GIVI, Krauser, H&B or whatever else they sell with there rack system. That should give you options

The Gobi's are nice George, I would stick with them since you do a lot off roading. They are durable HDPE, and even with the locks busted off as I have done they can easily be obtained and re-riveted back on. I keep an extra lock on hand just for that reason. The Aluminum ones look nice, but I think they are a little more tender than the Gobi's.

I have Al Jesse's Odyssey panniers on my 950 and think they are worth every penny. They're bomb-proof, have a slimmer profile, and are customized to fit the 950, unlike the standard box designs. Jesse is a pleasure to do business with and his stuff is top-notch and made in the USA. Sorry if I sound like a commercial endorsement, but you should check them out!
