950 Supermoto Chronicles

    Picked up the bike today from the 600 mile service. 3 valves needed shimming. Cost was $273, plus $19 for the shims, $39 for oil, and $17.4 ( :eek1 ) for the filter. ~$350 total, which makes sense given that it's a bit less labor intensive than the A. I also had the cannister removed.



    Like many bikes, the plate holder setup isn't exactly elegent looking,

    So I removed the bracketry and it looks much cleaner

    Naturally, the plate holes didn't line up, so I had to drill additional holes.


    Tomorrow, I hope to start installing some Hard Parts

    plate holder - I'm amazed KTM doesn't have a decent plate holder! This is just dumb. I was sold a stamped steel Ducati item, but it didn't fit either. Redrilling the reflector bracket was an option; I just wanted something more elegant.

    I just took a piece of aluminum stock from ACE hardware (1/8" x 1" x width of plate) and drilled four holes in it. After rounding the edges, I countersunk the center holes for flat head CS machine screws and spray painted it flat black. Its very solid and stealthy, looking just like its a factory part. I inserted rubber electronic cabinet feet/bumpers into the lower holes. Total cost about a buck.

    1st thing I did after parking the bike in the garage once I got it home from the dealer was to remove that fugly reflector bracket! Yack! The next morning, I had to lose the orange reflectors from the front fender piece. Not sure why, but those reflectors bug me a lot.

    Just did the oil last night with a friend. Not too bad, but certainly more effort than my CBR!

    wpbarlow: What good things resulted from the cannister removal?

    Mostly potential problem avoidance- first that a fill up or tipover wouldn't result in difficult starting and second that I wouldn't burn my hand or set the bike on fire if I screwed up draining it :lol3 . Also, as a general rule, imo the less stuff/hoses the better.

    From what I've read around here about fuel spraying from tanks, drain lines that hang right over hot headers, the potential for a KTM fireball :eek1 seems altogther too real! Has there been a documented occurrence?

    Not sure I'lll leave these on for general street use: need to see what the vibration is like, as you have to remove the thick rubber insert. So, I just installed one for comparison purposes and will decide tomorrow. However, a quick lookover seems to indicate that I might be able to cut off the outer third of the rubber insert and be able to use both.

    Is that tankbag easy to remove from the bike? I don't want to leave the bag on the bike when I get to the office, but I also don't want to monkey around with zippers and straps for 5 minutes.

    Looks good Walter ! Damn, I just ordered a 165 MJ and the axle sliders from Munn last night, I missed the lid for the MC and the cover for the frame :D .

    For the plate I just drilled new holes and mounted it directly to the fender, no extra hardware. I'd like to loose that parachute all togther but it would be a project with the integrated seat lock...

    I tried a rfs sm front fender I had lying around, it needs some plastic "machining" but will fit w/o much effort.

    As far as the cansiter goes, mine is still intact for but will be removed after the first service. For now I unplugged the tank vent from the canister line and ran a short length of clear line behind the headlamp. Since I have done this I have had zero problems with hot starts or after sitting in the sun with a full tank. The drain line from the mikuni valve under the airbox has also been dry.

    The last few rides home have been in the upper 50's and the bike feels lean in the midrange. Anyone else notice this ? I plan on removing the airbox acess covers, raising the needles one clip position and trying a 160 in the front and 165 in the rear, along with a tweak to the fuel screws.

    Regardless, what a great bike ! It really feels as flickable as my now gone 625SXC was in SM trim, but with smooth predictable power. If I ever get my new digi cam I'll post some pics...The agfa ephoto dinosaur finally went toes up :huh

    The case itself unzips from the base (whch is what's strapped to the bike) in a couple of seconds.

    I've been considering a SM for some time, but have been concerned about wind protection, however saw one on hols in France that appeared to have a screen. Anybody know if this is a one off or a readily available part?

    I don't know about the availability of a screen, but, I ran a BMW F650GS Dakar for 4 years, and the tiny wind deflector above the headlamp on the 950sm (the black bit in wpb's photo above) is FAR more effective up to 90 mph than the Dakar screen. The buffeting from the Dakar's screen and mirrors used to make my neck muscles creak something awful after an a hour or so.... NOT been a problem on the 950SM. My experience only... Your mileage may vary... Don't run with scissors.... etc etc :evil

    I too have found that the wind isn't that much of a problem up to 90 or even a little more. I'm coming off a CBR 600 and that's my reference point. I certainly wouldn't let the availability of windscreen stop me from buying one.

    Jolly705 has a thread in the Orange Crush section with a home fab screen. Worth checking out.

    And while this picture is up- I'm very surprised (but pleased) to report that after a couple of +150 mile rides I've detected no difference in foot vibration between this foot peg and the other one, which still has the full rubber installed.

    Ditto removing the handlebar end weights in order to install the handguards.

    Gas mileage (if that's important) is running about 33 mpg under mixed :evil conditions.

    I know it doesn't look like it, but the SM actually provides better wind protection than you'd expect. No, not like a windshield, but it does blunt the worst of the blast up to about mid-torso. If you have the KTM/Touratech tank bag, its up to about the sternum level. Above that its just a clean quiet wind blast. The bike has a slight forward lean, so overall its good up to about 80-90mph before you have to start really leaning into it.

    For cruising at 60mph, its really not a problem for an hour or so at a time.

    ... or maybe I'm too distracted by what a complete hoot this thing is to ride. :wings
