    With only 18 days until the midnight run, who is planning on going? After 3 consecitive 1st place finishes I have had a string of bad luck. It started 3 years ago when the event was canceled due to weather, the following year I found a gravity pocket leaving my house and cracked the oil case, followed lastly by an inpact with a Volvo that has sidlined me for 1 1/2 years.     Here is the No BS answer, this is a timed Road Rally, keep an avg speed of 30mph over 120 miles ( 2 legs 60 miles each). Unknown check points along each leg and riders are started 1 minute apart, first rider out at 12:01am. All paved roads, no GPS assistance, just a route sheet with mileage, street name and direction to go (R, L, SR, etc). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

    Details of scoring if you want to be completive - Each rider starts with 1000 points, deductions are taken 1 point for each min late and 2 points for each minute early. Time does not adjust after each check point, if you are late you need to make up your time to get back on your minute, if you are early you need to pull over or slow down to get back on your minute. NO time allowances as you may have seen in off road rallies nor do you wait at the check point if you are early. Just check in and leave. <o:p></o:p>

    Final note - 75% of the participants just want to show up ride through the night, make it home safe and sound to say “Hey I did the Crotona Midnight run and here is my finishers medal”. <o:p></o:p>

    The other 25% like myself are in it to win, following all the rules, keeping a log of checkpoints and check in times, adjusting speed and keeping two if not three stop watches running.<o:p></o:p>

    Thanks for the reply. You did not go overboard. My only other question would be, how do you maintain 30 MPH on public roads? Are you a nuisance to other traffic if the posted speed is 50 MPH?

    First most of the route is on secondary roads with 25 to 40 mph speed limits, second the event is conducted between the hours of 12 midnight (midnight run) and 6am. The only folks you relly need to worry about are the drunks at 4am leaving the bars who are trying to figure out how drunk are they to see a motorcycle out at 4am in Febuary. Third point is the event starts in Yonkers has a mid point of Lake Carmel with it all ending in Yonkers. Many rual roads used for this. My last point for this question is part of the rules, no check point can be within 5 miles of another. So when the event starts you have 4.9 miles to go as fast as you want before they can have a check point. They have used the Bronx River Parkway so you know they do not expect you to go 30 on a hwy. So it is safe to say keep hwy speeds until the off ramp then pull over until you are back on your minute. Same rule goes for check points on the route. Get lost but just passed a check don't panic there cannot be another check point for 5 miles so you have some time to catch up. Also keep this in mind as you are riding and another bike comes racing up, most likely the rider is off his minute and trying to make up time, move over and let them go by. This is a race but everyone is on an even playing field, it is not who comes accross the finish line first but who had the highest score (everyone starts at 1000). Once again sorry I guess I can talk alot.:eek1

    The 90<SUP>th</SUP> annual Crotona <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:time w:st="on" Hour="0" Minute="00">Midnight</st1:time> Run was held on Sunday February 24<SUP>th</SUP>. Thanks to Ramapo MC who has continued this event since 1998 when the Crotona MC no longer had the membership to do so. Ramapo MC must send 22 of its members out into the same conditions the riders are in to man check points, 10 in total. The <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="0" Minute="00">Midnight</st1:time> Run is not a Parade or a Poker Run, this event is a road enduro, in which the participants must keep an average speed of 30MPH over 120 miles. Every rider starts with 1000 points and loses 1 point for every minute they are late or 2 points for every minute they are early to a check point. This is not what makes this event special, what is unique about this ride is that it starts at 12 <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="0" Minute="00">midnight</st1:time> in February. Each rider must figure out how they are going to read a route sheet at night, keep an eye on the road and monitor a clock to stay at 30 miles per hour. Never mind the math that must happen when you miss a turn and need to recalculate all of your turns. One rider is prompted to leave the starting line every minute based on their starting number. This year we saw up to 12 inches of snow fall less then 24 hours before the starting time. The temperature at the sign up was around 32 degrees F. By <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="1" Minute="00">1am</st1:time> the cloud cover lifted, the moon was glowing and the temps plummeted to 13 degrees F. There was black ice around every corner plus the occasional local that had the great idea to shovel their driveway out after the local plow came through. We even had a portion of the ride crossing one of the many reservoirs at which time you went from clear visibility to fog so thick you could not see your front tire, but if you looked up, clear sky with the moon shining brighter then ever.

    As if all of the conditions were not enough of a challenging, two brothers decided to fire up their vintage 1946 Indian Chief and a 1946 Harley WL45 for the ride.<o:p></o:p>

    It is now <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="4" Minute="00">4am</st1:time> and after the scheduled break at the <st1:City w:st="on">Carmel</st1:City> diner, for some just enough time to warm up, you mount up and start your ride back to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Yonkers</st1:place></st1:City>. The starter is there to get you on your way just like at <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="0" Minute="00">12am</st1:time> one rider at a time separated by one minute. This is when some folks decided they have had enough and get to the closest highway headed home. But for others more ice covered back roads and the random car that I am sure the driver is shocked to see you. I can only imagine the phone call to their friend “What did you put in my soda, I passed 10 motorcycles on my way home.” “Go back to sleep you must be dreaming.” <o:p></o:p>

    Around <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="6" Minute="00">6am</st1:time> on the empty streets of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Yonkers</st1:City></st1:place> 18 riders found their way back to Nathan’s on <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Central Ave</st1:address></st1:Street> for the final check point. <o:p></o:p>

    Now 18 riders have a story about how they got on their motorcycles, drove to <st1:City w:st="on">Yonkers</st1:City> on a Saturday night, ride 120 miles only to get back to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Yonkers</st1:place></st1:City> on Sunday morning and then ride home.     What kinds of bikes are people typically riding? What is the best method to hold the route sheet and best way to light it? Are people running studs? I'm interested in doing this even though I learned of it about 10 minutes ago.

    I commute all winter long so I've got the cold weather gear, I did the TAT with a roll chart so the mental math is no stranger. But this would be my first event like this. Sounds interesting.

    Thanks, great advice. Hopefully I can make it. A dry night would be a real positive. In my experience it is tough to keep the rain out for that many hours regardless of what rain gear you're wearing. My rain gear is getting pretty ragged, the crotch definitely leaks (of course all the places).
