That filter looks like it was cooked rather than just being dirty. Have you added a fuel injector cleaner to your fuel since you had that filter in? If you have then that is good information to know. I'm always pretty leery about those injector cleaning products. <o></o>

No, no additives. Just too much time. I agree, it does look and feel "cooked".
The plastic under the metal caps that fell right off is all brittle and falls apart easily.
I've got the pump back on the Safari Tank, will burp coolant and then.....
...Keep your fingers crossed that Punkin starts up nice.

So, when I go to start this up, with no fuel primed in the pump, how long does it normally take to start?
Not there yet, just eating lunch and wondering.....
Seemed like a no issue, fired right up. Maybe a couple extra seconds of starter time but I don't remember it being much of any extra time

Cycle the bike on and off a couple of times (as in turn the key on and off with the start switch in the ON position.
This will cycle the pump enough times to pressurize the lines completely and allow you to check for leaks before actually trying to start the bike.

Want to give us a little more details on the particulars of how you got this to be?
I did not need new O-rings, so I saved 'em.
All I need next time are those filters that SHOULD be WAY cheaper

So I contacted chinese filtermakers in China. I got three or four of them to reply. Started talking to one of them and agreed to start a sample. The initial thought was for the cylindrical paper filter. After some back and forth to conclude on the shape of the metal sides, I received a few samples in the beggining of 2012. I installed one in my injected KTM and checked it didn't disintegrate under the high fuel pump pressure. In the meantime I realised the tea bag filter should also accompany the cylindrical filter. So I asked the manufacturer to produce a tea bag filter. I asked for 50microns particles being the largest that can pass, according to opinions from in here. Some samples were made by early October and were tested. Tests passed and I've been sending a couple of them since March. At the moment there are 10 installed. In one case a guy with the'09 model had one giving him signs of clogged flow in 1000kms. However when he installed the OEM, after mine, he got problems in less than that. He thought the sides of the filter got to stick together, so I installed a spring inside to keep the two sides separate and help suction.
So now is delivery time. I also opened a thread in the vendor's area.
I'm going to get cj's kit and also gefr's filters and carry them with me. At 14,000 miles I an not even going to check my filters yet.
But I will be ready to do the filter change out in the field if I have to. The reason for CJ's kit is to have all the extra's that might be needed such as o'rings.
One thing I have been wondering about. How about a prefilter before the fuel goes into the pump? Maybe in a cage so it doesn't touch the pump?

At 14,000 miles I'd go ahead and check them. Mine where pretty bad at 12,000 miles. I was in the process of installing CJ's oil drain hose and had the tank off and decided to check the pump because the tank was already off. Sure glad I did, much less effort doing it in the warm garage then out sitting next to a dusty or muddy road.
Well I hope looks are deceiving. I just don't think the fuel filter is going to fail. If it does I will be ready. If I end up doing them in the backcountry I'll just eat crow and kick myself.
I installed new filters on the fuel pump, put it all back together loosely (didn't torque down the tank or anything) started it up and there was a slight hickup and it stalled, then I hit the starter again and it started right up. I let it get up to temp, shut it down, then started it again, everything seemed fine. I put it all back together and torqued everything down and i got nothing.
I can hear the fuel injection priming, but i don't hear the pump doing anything... Is it possible I pinched a wire or something when I torqued the tank and crash bars down?
I'm so bummed i have a trip this saturday...
Hard to diagnose based on what you provided.
Check the quick disconnect first, if your hearing the pump prime but no go on the bike starting that would be first place to look.
If your not hearing the pump prime when turning the key on then it would be electrical. There are times people have knocked a connection loose on the pump itself when installing it into the tank.
Not unheard up.
You can also check to make sure you getting voltage to the pump when you turn on the key etc. Check the easy stuff first.
Thanks for the reply, but I'm a big idiot... the bike was in gear, so the safety switch prevented the start. Looks like I put it all back together correctly after all.
Stress of preparing for this trip and not having enough time is getting the better of me...
