A 625 Super Moto OFF ROAD?

    Is it possible to take a 625 super moto off road, with the right tire choice?

    I guess my question is how would the suspension handle it...

    As long as it's not muddy and you don't think it's a MX bike.Should be OK.Super Moto racers do it all the time.I got by on my LC4 with 17" wheels and road race,minimum tread tires on dirt ,gravel roads,even a creek crossing,scary but got by. Good 17" more aggressive dual sport tires should get you by with fun and safety.In the '40's,50's and 60's guys rode Harleys,Triumphs and BSA's with crappy tires,little or no suspension,had fun in spite of it! Didn't know any better! Do it!:freaky

    The guy I bought my 625 SMC from tried to do a convert with the stock rims to keep up with his dirt buddies on trails and fire fire roads, he tried some really weird tire combos.. He found information here on ADV which lead him to this original post from 6 years ago.

    I have the setup on my 05 and it does really well even with 50/50s on it, here is a pic of mine with Dunlop 606s on it. So depending on how much money you want to put into it, it may be a good route. I love mine, but it is up for sale here on ADV due to health reasons.

    Desertkev, sorry to hear about health situation. That is one of the prettiest bikes I've seen as far as KTMs go....that is exactly what I'd be interested in, now about the distance from Arizona to Georgia...:cry How much are you asking?

    I'm on the fence when it comes to the 625 smc, it's a great looking bike, I just found a gentleman who might trade me my 07 DR 650 for his 625, BUT I have really been bit by the off road bug and want something to get after it and keep up with my boys off road(friends on a 525 and a 640) :evil

    Well, I guess more research required, thanks for the information.

    So, the suspension had handle some fairly decent off roading?

    I guess tire selection would be important, anyone know what kind of knobbies will fit stock wheels?

    I know what you mean about it being a pretty motorbike, I drove with a friend 630 miles each way after seeing a picture of it. It looks really damn good in the garage.. I am asking $5300 for everything. I think it is on the 3 or 4th page of the classified by now, or if you can't find it just look on the Tucson CL. There is also a long ass detailed video of it including it running since I had a feeling it would go to a new owner shipped..
    I agree with KHVol, if you can help it, it is not a good idea to go 17s off road no matter what you put on them. Of course there is always a couple of exceptions, like if you live on a farm or a racetrack..
    When to comes to your comments about the suspension, granted I am still a noob, but I thought "C" has 12 inches of travel. Only real world experience that I have is that I don't turn away from potholes when I am on the SMC and I drove down a 9 inch curb and it was very surprising. It was noticeable, but not much else.

    So, the suspension is not really the concern, it's the front tire/wheel...I need to find a 19 inch wheel maybe?

    I'll see if I can find out how to make that work...anyone know?

    if it's the real sumo, it's got the radial 4pot front brake, and those won't clear the spokes w/a 21" wheel.... 17" sux off road, unless you're gonna just do fireroads, but if you run into some sand... good luck.... i just converted a 450 SMR to dirt 21/18" wheels, totally different thing.... i had to get a new front end for the brake to fit....

    I guess that's what I'm trying to figure out, is it cost effective to trade, when it's going to expensive to find a 21" front wheel, then brake set-up....

    I would do it, if I could find a set of wheels just for dirt that I know would fit the 625 smc, that weren't outrageously expensive.:huh

    Any idea where the previous owner found the wheels?
    Were you specifically looking for this package or just the bike?

    I wish they were included in the deal on the table, so to speak.

    the problem 'yer gonna find messin' w/KTM's is that there's a metric buttload of different parts... i'm doin' it right now trying to get a different set of triple clamps.... KTM changes/modifies part #'s like you change 'yer underwear.... and many of the parts are the same, but not quite!.... and the SMR forks are a little bit shorter and affect geometry..... if you're gonna do something like this, you gotta do alotta homework..... i been messin' w/the RFS bikes, i dunno about the bigger ones.... i think it's a euro/semi-socialist thing that they keep everyone working by minutely changing parts from year to year.... crazy stuff..... i dunno how they stay in bizness....

    I dont know if many of you have watched it much supermoto but half of the track IS dirt. If you are not riding very difficult terrain just go ride it!

    You can swap MANY MANY KTM lc4 parts and if I was to do what youre trying I would:
    Buy a used lc4 or SXC shock and forks along with a matching set of wheels with the appropriate front axle size to match the 43 or 48 mm fork.

    Then when you ride gnarly single track or hill climbs swap the whole shebang

    You mean, that lc4 parts will work on the 625 or just the forks from an lc4?

    this is pretty much what i did on my RFS sumo bike.... bought a new front end w/a wheel, and a new rear wheel... and it works great, still trying to tune the whole thing, springs, etc....

    sumo and dirt are pretty different, so....

    you gotta check out the parts fiche at one of the KTM parts places.... i like 'ktmpartshouse', they're the cheapest..... but askin' parts fitment here is gonna be pretty dangerous, unless you trust whose talkin'.... once you figure it all out, you gotta watch ebay or KTMTalk classifieds, and then you can do it cheapo $$$$.... KTM parts new ain't cheap..... i paid $450 for new forks w/front brake, i think about $225 for a nice 21" front wheel w/a brake rotor, so there was the front. i built a rear cush wheel for maybe $500, and i had the sprocket carrier. the rear cush is harder to find, and usually $$$, but it's real nice.... one of those 600's is gonna be nasty on the street w/o a cush....

    One of the best bikes I've raced on a hard packed MX track was my Husky SMR450. :lol3

    The worst case for these is rocky, tight stuff where the suspensions are a bit too firm, everywhere else they work pretty well. I've been severely humbled years ago by Doug Henry riding with slicks on a muddy MX track so it is the rider all the way.

    KTMs have about the best parts interchangeability of any brand, and massive used parts resources. A few different front axle sizes thru the years but you can mix and match forks, triples, rear wheels and brakes across the board. You just need to know what to look for.

    yeah, maybe doug henry can do a muddy mx track w/17" slicks, but the thought of that makes me wanna sit down and have a drink!..... :eek1
