Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it hopefully it brought back pleasant memories of your own ride.

Part of the idea was to catalog things that others might want to include in their own ride. Such a beautiful area!

What do you guys think of doing this run the first week or two of October? I would expect cold and rain but what about snow? Yeah I know varies from year to year but what about "average" years?

I would give you 50/50 odds. Weather then can be absolutely beautiful, or snowy and cold....often on the same day. :evil

July 5 & 6, between TO and Wawa, the temp was in the 30's C. July 7 from Wawa to Thunder Bay it was 11C all day and wet, not something we expected so we were somewhat cold, but frequent stops for hot drinks helped greatly. July 8 from TB to just past Duluth it was the same thing. As soon as we rounded Duluth it came back up into the high 20's.

The forecast made no mention of this. Whenever you head out for this trip, be prepared for any weather.

    Thanks CS.

I'll be using this report & tracks to help plan a similar ride this summer. Any suggested best time to go? We're thinking early August.

We met once briefly at the second CADV rally.

    Thanks again.

August sounds great. It can get really cool anytime though. My guess would be that there would be a lot tourists around during that time which could constrain some lodging or camping availability later in the day. I'm glad this thread and the tracks are helping you with your own trip.

I am doing this trip mid July and needed this to help plan my trip. I cannot express how gratetful I am to people like you who take the time and write these up. They take an enormous amount of time and energy.

    Cheers!

    P.S. I have a DL1000 to boot

Question for you. My zumo loaded with 2014 north america does not have the dirt/gravel roads listed to get to the Keweenaw Rocket Range so I plotted several waypoints using google earth.

1-is this how you have it plotted in your gpx file
2-how hard is it to do this on a DL1000, I am a very casual off road rider and as you know the 1000 is very top heavy.

Thanks in advance for the information :freaky

    DNS,

I drew the track based on track I recorded when I visited there in the past. It isn't hard to find. If you can't use tracks, you can still find it as there aren't many options to get lost.

The ride to the tip is sometimes difficult. It has protruding rocks and deep waterholes. When the holes are full, you can't see all of the rocks so they can cause you trouble. You will need a sturdy bash plate to safely make the run to the tip. If it is dry, you can kind of pick you way but ground clearance is tight. The side path to the rocket range is an easy ride.

I rode it all on a DL1000 without any problems.

As bad as it can be, I have still seen some old beat up cars out there that should not have made it without damage. :dunno

I'll have to admit that this is by far so much better then my RR that you'll see below. When I think of how much work went into mine and then compare the two, it's amazing how great this is. Many thanks for all of the effort....
