First...again, this RR by Cannonshot is a must read. With this thread and some planning you can hit this area and really feel well orientated upon arrival and have a great experience. Thanks again to CS and the other contributors!

I just got back from a 2 week trip down to BB from Northern VA. Great time to go as far as weather, climate, and crowds (none...except at the campgrounds - they were 90-100% full, but I found that 50% of the backcountry sites were open during my stay the first week of March). BACKCOUNTY camping IS the way to enjoy BB!!!!!

This was a neat trip for me. Part 1 was with my daughter on a break from college...we hit Nashville, Memphis, and Fort Worth, had a great time, and she flew home. Part 2 was the BB part of this trip with me solo. I had bumper hauled our family DR200 on my Tacoma (with a cap). This combo allowed me to haul *ss in comfort on the interstates, use 4x4 when needed, and camp like I was at the Ritz in the rear cap...and be able to meet some specific due dates regardless of weather (snow/ice) back home.

Thought it would be useful for those who are "hearing the call of Big Bend" to see some video of my trip in addition to the existing imagery in the thread. If there are any concerns about this being posted here...let me know please!

Enjoy, and thanks to all who led me here!

I always enjoy reading these trip reports. It forces me to remember how fortunate I am to ride at BB 2 to 3 times a year. Not surprisingly, I never tire of going there even though Ive ridden most of the roads many times. Oddly, there is a loneliness at BBNP and BBRSP that resonates with me even when I'm with many people. That, combined with the 520 mile trip from Temple over there with friends makes it unique and special. For three to four days, you forget about work and all the problems and disengage and decompress. You come back to the "real" world reinvigorated.:D

    Cannonshot;

Forgive me if I missed it (I am WAY behind, as usual) but I was wondering if you are camping in your van while on your trip. I have been contemplating doing something similar. Great RR by the way, thanks for sharing.

Yes, on this trip I operated out of three different base camps. Since it was still winter in Wisconsin when I left, I had to haul the bike down to Texas. I based camped in Fort Davis, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and Big Bend itself (Chisos).

Hey Cannonshot - your report inspired me to read Drug Lord by Terrence Poppa about Pablo Acosta and drug trafficking in the region in the 1970s. That book,in turn, inspired me to go find Pablo's grave site. So, on my most recent trip down I went and found it just south of Ojinanga. As expected, big grave on the top of a hill. While I was out there I picked up Fredericko Villalba's Texas by Juan Casas. Another great book that adds color and depth to an area I can never get enough of. Tells the story of a principal turn of the century family in the Terlingua/Study Butte region. It gives a strong appreciation for the work done to eek out a living in the area, how the folks and the community at that time lived as well as the undercurrent of racialy fueled difficulties. It also gives meaning to a lot of the names of places I've visited in the Western portion on BBNP.

Thanks again for this great write up! I'll be referring back to it on future forays to the area.

How did I miss this one? The Ft Davis mountains interest me.

I saw this in the news today . . . I was in Van Horn in following some of Cannonshot's tracks back in March.

I want to go back to Big Bend again soon . . . just a reminder to be mindful of one's surroundings!

Turns out they think the two got hit by a passing 18 wheeler by accident in the dark. Tragic.

My wife and I are going down to BB in April. Can't believe it's been 14 years since we were last down there. It's been great re-reading your report, Bryan. Reminds me why we loved it the first time.

    Bryan,
Headed back to both BigBends in January.
Used your tracks twice---------but was always traveling thru and never did explore all there is-------and all that you have shared.
Going to ride extensively this time.
Bringing a plated dirt bike for the State Park----------and a bigger bike (undetermined which one yet----690 or African Twin) for riding elsewhere.

Thanks again----------what I've ridden so far of your tracks-------my favorite was the ride right on the Mexican border Northwest of Presidio---------and Godzilla hill. Now that was a hoot.

I'll be in the BBNP during the Christmas and New Years holidays. Then back in March for more fun and games, but on the r1150gs.

Here is a video of the road right along the Mexican border that Cannonshot provide us------just northwest of Presidio.

Do not go out here if it's wet.

I hope all you guys that are heading down there have a great time. :thumb

Mark, when you get into BBRSP, I'm not sure we ever actually located the trail in that NE corner where I got stuck in the loose stone in the creek. If you find that short piece of the actual trail near the stream, map it and I'll check to see if a refinement is needed for that spot. It may not exist and the track may be true to the streambed.

Hope you all have good weather and good times!

Cant believe I never read this rr. What a great ride report. Also heading down this spring in March. Will be going solo and riding the wr down. This ride report gives me lots of ideas where to go. I like your basecamp approach if I drive down. Brian, if I dont drive, did you have any favorite backcountry camping sites?
