For everyones viewing enjoyment some fall colors of Michigan. I took this ride the first week of October on the trusty KLR250. A little more back ground for the reason behind this trip. I've lived in Michigan my whole life but have never explored much of the upper peninsula (UP). For the rest of the RR I will refer to the upper peninsula as the UP, I guess its a Michigan thing. So after doing a ride on my 800GS across the US this past August, I decided it was in order for a minimalist ride on the klr. With a fresh pair of pirelli mt21's mounted it was ready to ride.

Dirt roads northbound and avoiding I-75 at all costs.

Plenty of 2 track in the upper part of the mitten.

    Half way there

Sun sets a bit sooner in the fall need to find a campsite for the first night.

I make it to Petoskey for the night and get a place at the local KOA.

Total for one day all back roads.

Those are some very impressive Fall colors. We are thinking the UP just might be in our trip plans. We will follow your RR and look forward to more pictures. Keep it coming.

Best wishes on your trip. I have a feeling there will be some waterfall pics in a couple of days. We just bought your bike's cousin the KL250G. Even a few days on backroads is refreshing. Hope you stay warm.

Up early before the sun comes over the horizon.

    Looking to the east.

    Then the west.

Here's how I have the 250 set up for this trip. Tools on the front fender. Maps, camera, etc in the tank bag. Sleeping bag and tent on the rack. Dirt bags holding clothes, tubes, rain gear ( never needed it! )

Made it to the bridge without taking one bit of I-75!

Panoramic that didn't turn out so well, the waves don't match up.

Lets take a ride across the mackinac bridge. Since the right had lane was closed I had to ride on the steel grate. That along with knobby tires make for quite a ride!

I could feel it in that video when you were wobbling around on the grates. Always a thrill. :D

I always ride the grate, whether the paved part is closed or not. Can't see down otherwise.

I have to admit I was a little nervous about riding the grate with my tire choice. Since I was planning on riding plenty of dirt I wasn't sure how the pirelli mt21's would be on the bridge. To my surprise there was a bit of a shake, but I nothing to really worry about after all.

Now back to some more pictures.

Now that I'm in the UP for the first time on the 250 its time to find some dirt roads on my way up to Whitefish point.

After leaving whitefish point I made my way to tahquamenon falls
    Lower falls
    [IMG]

    Upper falls
    [IMG]

I was more impressed with the upper falls than the lower. After spending a bit of time walking around doing the tourist type thing at the falls I figured I was time for some more dirt roads and trails. I set my gps to shortest distance to
Grand Marais, Mi. Most of these roads are nothing more than sandy 2 track through the woods in the UP. It almost seems like there is two types of dirt roads. Some are wide enough for two fullsize vehicles to pass going in opposite directions like these.

Then my gps showed these as roads as well. I wouldn't consider these a much of a road as more as 2 track.

Lots of sand in the UP, the pine forest in some of these area's smelled great to ride thru.

Luckly I made it onto a dirt road that followed Lake Superior for a bit. Stopped here to enjoy the view for a bit.

    Not another person in sight.

    Almost looks like the ocean.

Can you spot the hiding klr?

    More fall colors

Grand sable lake just outside of Grand Marais. This is where road H58 starts, the eastern half is a fun twisty road worth riding. Its all freshly paved, I had heard that it use to be sand and dirt. I won't pass up a good twisty paved road.

This ride report is a treat - excellent pictures and a fine story about a relatively small bike doing a worthwhile ride. I have heard great things about the UP and these pictures have reminded me i want to ride there. Thank you.

Thank you, I'm glad you are enjoying the pictures. I wish I would of explored the UP long ago. If you do go I would say go during the fall when the colors are near peak as I did. I came home through the UP when I came home from out west on the GS at the end of August. All of the trees at that time where still green. I rode a few of the same areas on the 250 just a little over a month later and it was by far more scenic.

It was starting to get late and I was hungry after riding most of H58 heading towards Munising. I stopped at a little place called the Bear Trap to grab a quick burger and fries before heading to Miners Castle. I got there just in time to catch the last bit of daylight for the day which made for some awesome pictures.

Great pics, the water up there is super duper clear but still very chilly!! I went up in July and Brrrr!! Lake Superior does not warm up that much. Girlfriend age 21 decided that since the beach we were on was "desserted" she'd do a little skinny dipping, she got out about 1/8 mile into the water it all being about waist deep around Muninsing area before she noticed an onlooker up on the beach :rofl Needless to say she was a bit embarrassed.

I like to get an early start to the day while I'm on vacation. I don't mind one bit getting up early and hopping on the bike when there are views like this to be had.

For most of the trip I was getting up in the dark, packing my tent and sleeping bag on the bike and hitting the road at the first hint of daylight.
