I did the math and probably would have not made the 3rd lap in time, but that's the first time I quit before I saw the checker's. I proved to myself I can do a race without injury so now I am pissed with that finish and will guarantee a better one at the next race. I know it sounds crazy to not be happy with 9th out of 25th, but if I stop expecting more from myself I'll just follow someone on the trail when I'm tired instead of digging deep and doing what needs to be done to get to the front.
10.5 miles in the woods on the bike??? I'd be in trouble...good for you! All the fast guys in our club ride/race mountain bikes, in fact the 38 yo AA guy won the last race overall trophy used to be a pro moutain biker.

I'll be honest, after 2 lackluster races (9th place twice) and Haley not racing due to a broken collarbone I wasn't in the mood to write up a race report. It's frustrating to see guys you raced against last year finishing well ahead of you knowing with a new bike I should be doing better. It comes down to me riding better, and each race you go out there hoping this is the race where you can find some speed.

The race this time took place in northeast Florida near the town of Palatka. The property was flat with Sat race being 6 miles and Sunday's being 9.6. Haley had 2 other girls in her class (Jr. girls) so she was both excited and nervous about how her shoulder would hold up under race conditions

Haley got a decent start and looked tentative but rolling. Apparently on the first lap both girls made mistakes and she had the lead. Now with many of the "C" classes the winner may not be the fastest but the one that makes the least mistakes. Haley was reminded of that when a mud hole put her in an awkward position and several minutes passed until she get extracted:cry 2nd lap was also eventful as when pulling over for a faster rider she ended up getting her left arm yanked pretty good (collarbone shoulder) so she came in and called it a race. She determined to do better next race and I have no doubt she will.

Now it's my turn. 17 riders on the line including the usual suspects...you know who you are:D Got a good start so I'm third heading into the woods. Not long and both 1st and 2nd place blow a corner and I'm in first.:huh History shows this won't last long as I dump it in a sandy corner and give it right back. The course has several straights including one so long I'm tapped out in 5th with my head tucked behind the bars and the temptation to grab the left fork tube just like my hero.

passing slower riders on the gas and brakes as the front end dives to mother earth and the rear skips around trying to join the front..dang this is fun! First couple of laps I'm in 4th then 5th. Have a good battle with Mike Hunter (828C) as I pass him in the planted pines only to give it right back on a bad line choice. I'm following him as he's picking good lines through the mud and not making any mistakes. Last lap I'm hollering as we are having a great battle in the field going back into the woods. He manages to put 2 stragglers between him and I before we dump off a straight into the mud. I end up stuck behind 2 guys who aren't sure what to so i and up having to go over a log while in mud up to the axles. Hop off the bike when the rear won't come over and with a good push I'm rolling but my energy is gone. Hit a kicker on some uneven whoops and over the bars I go:eek1 Once I get the bike started the finish line isn't far away...5th! Might have had something for Mike at the end but the mud and crash did me in. Finally rode better and am looking forward to next weekend ! Was good having Haley back racing as i enjoy our time talking racing:raabia

Great way to get back at it TBone. Not many minutes separting you from a higher finish, so eliminating one or two mistakes puts you on the podium. :clap

The race this weekend is put on by the Sunrunners MC club. It is also the site of the best race of my life which happened last year. In that one I had the lead several times only to give it back and finished 2nd. My hope was lightning could strike twice.....
Haley was also looking to improve upon the last 2 times she was here. A year ago this was her first race on the big bike and one lap was all she could manage with a face full of tears. Haley had one other girl in her class and once the horn sounded she was off in pursuit. The speed isn't there and it really frustrates her as she tries to get used to riding on the edge. A snafu on the hard /easy split cost her some time and she finished 10 minutes behind 1st place but she did complete 3 laps here (a first) and didn't get hurt so we'll call this race a good one.

This was going to be my first race with the rekluse auto clutch. The practice lap showed much promise as worrying about stalling the bike was a thing of the past. I also had a set of air cells installed on the front forks and they seemed to take a little of the initial bite from the roots and sharp edge bumps on the course.
The horn sounds and I'm hitting the start button (trans in 2nd gear)the same time I'm throwing my leg over the bike. No clutch needed as I feed it throttle and shoot towards the first corner...Hole shot!!!

    (I'm on the far left)

Last time I raced against 172C he beat me pretty well, so starting with him behind me gives me a chance.

I'm strangely pretty calm as I work at putting slower riders I encounter behind me and work at keeping first. I don't see anyone passing me as I come through the scoring chicane to finish the first 10 mile lap and it shows me in 3rd.... "3rd?" I'm thinking as I head back out. Unless someone took a real shortcut I didn't see that scoring has to be wrong. For the next 3 laps it shows the same thing as I'm riding a uneventful race trying to balance going fast without wrecking and giving it away

soon the race is over and once the scoring snafu is figured out..

Finally...never thought it would happen:clap Now i need to worry about not getting too many adv points and getting bumped to "B"...:lol3

Thanks fellas. I currently have 15 adv points towards 25 that will bump me up to "B". A win is worth 10 points so as long as I don't win the next one I'll be okay for the rest of the year as past the 1/2 way point they don't promote until the end of the season.

I broke a chain at the second to last national and it narfed the shit out of the slave cylinder, somehow causing the clutch to not engage until the r's were real high, then "BAM!". I have since remove the pushrod and throwout from the engine and taken the clutch lever off of the perch. Who needs it anyway?

This weekends race takes place at Carlton Ranch in central Fl. The property offers a a creek running through it that Sat riders crossed 2 times and Sunday 7 times! Sat mileage was 8 miles and Sunday 12.
Haley had decided to race Junior C this race against the boys. As much as she started on the same line with them when racing Junior girls, the idea of actually racing everyone on her line was hoped to motivate her and make for some better battles for her. She got a good start and was mid pack at the first corner

she looked to be having fun as she completed the laps.

and as the checker flew she came in laughing and smiling about having more people to compete against and the decision to go with Junior C was deemed a success , in spite of the finishing order (14th out of 17)

On a side not she was only one minute behind the girl that beat her by 10 last race!

My race started like the last one...Holeshot!!

and after crossing the creek it was off into the woods.

and just like last race..never saw anyone from my class for 3 laps. I put a minute on the field each lap as I passed stragglers and kept a decent pace.

On the 3rd lap mile 8 I thought" I need to slow down or I'm going to win and get promoted". I did just that for a while as I thought about what the right thing to do was. I wouldn't want some ones first win to be because I sand bagged, plus I had wanted first place for so long the idea of giving up another one seemed crazy to me. So i wicked it back up and came across with the win!!!

Now I'm promoted to "B" next race...and that's where the big dogs run:huh:eek1
