INVERCARGILL to OAMARU via SLOPE POINT, New Zealand

We did almost all we wanted to do and see down south. The only place left is the Slope Point, the southern most point of South Island, so we packed up and rode a couple of hours along the coast. It's just one of those places you need to see when you're in the area.

I think Burt would have been fairly chuffed to be portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the movie, one of my favorite actors.

Then it was all the way back to Oamaru. It's our second visit here and no wonder, it is a really nice town, kind of sticking out among the other towns of New Zealand. This time we stayed in the camp site next to the beautiful Public Gardens and had a couple of more walks around them.

OAMARU to HANMER SPRINGS, New Zealand

We already saw pretty much everything we wanted to see in the south island and even started riding the same roads twice and coming back to the same places like Oamaru, Hanmer Springs etc so it was time to move. Before we get the ferry to the North Island we wanted to explore the a bit of the Abel Tasman area and the Golden Bay. After spending the last couple of days enjoying the Oamaru gardens we packed the bike and rode all the way up to Hanmer Springs straight to the campsite we have visited twice already.

HANMER SPIRNGS to MOTUEKA, New Zealand

Sheldon was a bit tired after yesterday's ride and he had one more long ride today ahead of him so I packed the bike while he was watching tv. What surprised me was that when I went into the tv room to get him he wasn't watching news nor sports as he usually does but Dance Moms, wtf. Well, it must be a sign we're coming back to the same places too much and we should definitely move on. So we were back on the bike and riding up north ... but not until the Dance Moms finished ;-)

As for the tv rooms, pretty much every private campsite we stayed at had one, sometimes even more than one which was great for us, especially in bad weather. There were always those places to hang out and meet people and relax after long rides.

We headed off via Lewis Pass which was a nice but long ride due to heavy traffic. The tourist season is in full swing with lots and lots of vans, campers etc on the road. I guess that might also be one of the reasons why I much prefered the Arthur's Pass which we did at the beginning of December when we first arrived and it was so much more quiet.

Once we got past Motupiko the landscape changed a bit, now we were riding among farmlands and fields planted with different kind of fruit bushes and trees and I really loved that part. It reminded me so much just how much I love that kind of lifestyle, I wouldn't mind picking some of the fruit up for later. Also, the road was pretty much empty which added even more to that part of the ride.

MOTUEAKA to CAPE FARELL, New Zealand

The ride up Cape Farell, the northernmost part of South Island, was a pretty nice one. I'm not sure if it's even possible to get tired of such an amazing scenery. We've been here for over two months now and natural beauty of the place still takes my breath away.

That's the only photo I've got of me in Cape Farell, Sheldon forgot to put his glasses on ;-)

CAPE FARELL to PICTON via QUEEN CHARLOTTE DRIVE, New Zealand

We spent a couple of days in Collingwood in the campsite as it was raining. It's great that we can actually do that, so many people have to keep moving cause they've got a limited time to do all they want to do while on holidays. Well, in a way this time we've got kind of limited time too, only three months and two of them are already gone.

It was the same way for us back to Motueka and actually here in New Zealand even Sheldon doesn't mind riding the same roads twice. From there we rode along the coast line and past Nelson the road got really twisty and squiggly which made for a great day on the bike.

Over the last few days pretty much everywhere we went there was this shrilling sound all around us. It was something I've never heard before, Sheldon on the other hand knew exactly what it was. These were cicadas and we were waking up and falling asleep with their loud singing. Even my mum heard it over skype when I called her and was so curious what that was.

Ferry ride from PICTON to WELLINGTON and up north along road no 1

We had a leasurly morning packing up and up on the ferry by the afternoon. I must admit, we were pretty lucky with the weather on the ferry again, perfectly blue sky, not much wind so the crossing was extra pleasant. We weren't really sure if we would stay in Wellington or ride a bit more today but once we got off the ferry Sheldon still had a bit of strength for an afternoon ride. It was a busy ride though, there was a lot of traffic along no 1 road but for me as a passenger it was a really nice one, the afternoon sun was a perfect light for it too as you can see on the video below.

OPUNAKE via SURF HIGHWAY, New Zealand

We were on our way north and Sheldon being a surfer wanted to check out some of the good surfing spots he heard about. He knew they were somewhere near overlooking Mt Taranaki but didn't really knew exactly where but it's never a problem here in New Zealand. The good thing about New Zealand being geared towards tourism so much is that you can get free maps and brochures about pretty much every place in this country and so we also came across a map of the best spots on the surf highway.

We arrived in Opunake, set up our tent and even though we were both tired having ridden all day with lots of stops we didn't want to miss a perfect afternoon and went for a walk up to check out some more waves. Having lived pretty much all my life inland I'm definitely not a coastal person and that's why it always amazes me the influence the ocean has on Sheldon. Just watching the waves energises him so much, it's always cool to see it.

Opunake is a pretty nice town and we were very luck to be there for the Americana festival, just by pure chance. It was actually a great experience and to this day I cannot get my head around how come there are so many old American vintage cars in New Zealand. We spent the whole morning watching the cars and I expected to see a dozen of them at the most but there was more coming and coming so eventually we got on a bike and starting riding against them.
