    Hi guys,

In about a month's time the ADDC 2012 will start. I just openend the thread as I'll be heading over for the duration of the event with a good mate of mine, not as a racer this time, but as a volunteer worker for the organisers :evil No money or time at the moment, maybe next year round to do it again?!?
A great chance to witness the event from a different perspective, though.

Our exact jobs haven't been assigned, yet, but there was talks of maybe being part of technical scrutineering at first, so you racers better make sure you're well prepared or I won't pass you! :lol3

We'll obviously be taking tonnes of pics for all of you! :beer

    Hiya Tony.
Keep an eye out for Matt Fish (Fishy) riding a KTM 450 EXC for CPW Safari (Don McGrath's backing from Cycle Products West). His bike will have a few bits of my 450 Rally fitted to it:lol3. Wish I could be there.

I'll be expecting some serious boneheading from you on those Tuareg live videos then! :lol3

Will do! Is Matt an Aussie, or a semi Aussie like yourself hailing from the strange Island east of Australia? :D

No problem. I'll try and update daily, as long as I can get internet access at the bivouac. Probably even worth to get a mobile broadband card, we'll see...

That list usually is out around 2 weeks before the start. The majority will be the usual pros (Coma, Rodrigues, West, Sam, etc), the locals (Stephen Collie, Matt Trehy, etc.) and just the odd few new faces I guess.

I think Gaugain is riding (he's certainly fit), so with him Sam and James there will be some awesome racing just between the dubai based riders. I would imagine the usual internationals will attend so it should be a great race. Hopefully the late announcement of the race will not deter too many.

Steve You and Steve Collie will be pushing top 15 and the honour of fastest "Steve" and there's a bunch of us 'steadier' guys and girls (Tonya Colson) mid-pack.

Fishy's a true blue Aussie as far as I know. I'd certainly duck quickly if you called him a Kiwi to his face:lol3. He's reasonably quick and keen to do well and measure himself for Dakar aspirations. His bike should be pretty good too, running a CPW nav tower and wiring loom (with a JayBo soldering in there too:wink:) and a fairly good motor with a few "interesting" bits, both internally and externally. The magnesium oil cooler is pretty special so take a gander at that.
I look forward to seeing your reports "from the other side":deal.

EDIT: I forgot to say ... g'day to Matt, Steve, Steve, Paul and all the other Dubai guys I met in my last couple of visits to the UAE:wave. Have a great time and I'll be watching and thinking of you.

    Ciao

Picked up the Saudi Gazette at work today and low and behold there's a piece this year's ADDC. So I went to their website to pick out the text:

ABU DHABI – The 2012 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge (March 30 – April 6) is set to feature an even more varied line-up than ever before, with some 35 different nationalities and a record number of female competitors already signed up to tackle the towering dunes and spectacular terrain of the formidable Liwa Desert.

With the registration deadline for the 22nd edition of one of the world’s toughest and most popular cross-country rallies just hours away, the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE), organizer of the race, has confirmed it has already received entries from across six continents.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, ATCUAE President and founder of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, said: “The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is a ‘Must’ for all serious rally drivers and riders. It is renowned for participants and their machines, to their absolute limits, giving them a chance to really prove themselves in front of their peers. That is why, in its 22nd year, it continues to attract such a strong line-up of entrants from around the world.”

In a significant development for the race, 2012 sees a marked increase in entrants from South America, with competitors from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela and Uruguay already confirmed. By attracting growing numbers of entrants from a continent where rallying is extremely popular, the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will further spread the names of one the world’s most beautiful and spectacular locations, the Western Region of Al-Gharbia.

Among the contestants battling it out across the dunes and stunning scenery of the Rub Al-Khali (Empty Quarter), there will once again be a strong contingent from right across the Middle East. Notably, the UAE’s entrants include two of the region’s most famous rally drivers, Sheikh Abdulla Al-Qassimi and Khalifa Al-Mutaiwei.

An indication of the increasing popularity of cross-country rallying among female racers, the global appeal of the rally sees the number of participants rise to six this year. Desert Challenge regular and UAE resident, Sheila Hutton-Barker will again compete in a Nissan Patrol as co-driver to her husband Ian. The Brit will be joined by contestants from Brazil, Bulgaria, the US and Italy, including the most experienced female quad biker in the field, Camelia Liparoti.

This year riding a Yamaha Raptor 700 quad bike, Liparoti has taken on and completed the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge three times before, providing the ideal springboard to help her claim the crown of women’s champion of the FIM Cross Country Rallies Championship for the past three years.

The Desert Challenge is held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and with support from a number of key partners including as the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, Nissan and ADNOC.

    "record number of female competitors"

This is surely the best news :p hahahahahha

Dunno if i will manage to put back together my Dakar bike but i should be going to race in the new Junior class (under 25 of age) and it will surely be really tough, Sam is on another planet and last weekend i met two 19yr old twins from Spain (their surname is Escale) which have been racing in the World Enduro Championship and will come to the Desert challenge aswell on Honda's and i can tell you they are really fast!!!

I will try to have my GoPro on in every Special Stage so that after the race i can upload some onboard videos for who won't be able to be there!

At the moment this is the work in progress of my bike in my grandparents garage.....

Sure, looking forward to meeting you, too! Will you be travelling down to the bivouac or just hanging around Yas?

Manuel, like I wrote to you already, give me a shout if I can help out in any way!

Further to Jaybo's comments re Matt Fish, this will be the bike that he will be using at the DC. He is there now and hopefully getting the bike cleared from customs and starting to put it back together after its trip in a very small box !!
