Sorry for the last minute questions. I searched a little. Not enough I'm sure. Sitting in the terlette at work as I type. Just found out last night that the wife and I have a 3 day weekend and she wants to check the tail of the dragon off her list. We'll hit that and the Cherohola skyway but after that, no idea. We have supetmoto wheels for both bikes but currently have the dirt wheels on and usually do. I guess my question is, is there any fun trails in the area we could ride and where? We'll have half day friday and all day saturday to kill. We'd love to hear about some scenic trails we could play on so I won't feel like we're burning up MX tires on the street for nothing...:lol3

Plenty of dirt/gravel roads in the area. Tatum Gap is probably the most well known but is currently closed. There are some forest service roads near the Cherohala. At the beginning of the Skyway, when coming from Deal's Gap or Robbinsville is fs81 starts just to the right of the skyway. It changes name at the top but can be taken all the way to river road. Take a right on river road and you will see Bald River Falls and end up back on the Skyway near Tellicho Plains.

Stop at Tellicho Motorcycle Outfitters and the owner who is an inmate here will be glad to give you directions to more good riding.

The first half of this ride report shows some of the riding in the area, paved and unpaved: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=589110

Dual Sport bikes are ideal for riding this area but Supermotos with street tire will work pretty good on much of the unpaved stuff too.

TONS and TONS of great off-road riding in the area. I go 3-4 times a year.

Gravel dragon? Sweet! Winding stairs and buzzard roost. This is looking good. We're amped. Tellico mc outfitters on the list as well.
Hopefully we can knock out 129, get the pic and shirt, Fugitive dam, all on Friday then free to roam on Saturday.

OK buzzards roost is probably out.

Can you cut across Chilhowee dam to hit some backroads to Tellico?

Someplace cheap with a bed and hot shower that I can leave the truck all weekend. Any recommendations?
Thought about stringing together Fontana dam first. Then 129 north then cut across Chilhowee dam and head for Tellico. Hafta see when outfitters closes. It'll be 4 by the time we're riding. Maybe head straight there or just wait until Saturday.

Wish we had more time but it is what it is...

about 99% sure you cant cross chilhowee dam.
youll have to run into vonroe and then head to tellico.
Thats starting to become a streety ride especially if you take the cherohala back over to somewhere.

    what would your preference be?
    a street ride
    or
a dual sport ride with everything from offroad to twisties? (wouldn't run SM wheels on this ride)

WHere will you "arrive" on Friday afternoon? Gatlinburg, Maggie Valley, Townsend???? Meaning where can you start from?

Robbinsville? Thought that looked central. Guess we can do 129 b both ways. Amy wants to ride 129, get the t-shirt to rub in her sisters face (cruiser rider sister) get some pics and see where Han Solo jumped off the dam. Then we're looking for gravel roads and easy trails with some scenery. Waterfalls. Fire towers. What have you. River road looked good. Maybe Cherohola to tellico and river road back.

We'll have full MX tires. Amy like to ride trails but not wrestle a 300 pound bike.

Yea robbinsville is central to good riding..... but not central to anything else. Long way to go for it to be your "starting point".

Yea most good rides out there end up doing 129 both ways - not a big deal b/c it's a rippin' good piece of road. Let's try to get you riding it on Friday before the weekend traffic shows up.

I'll be glad to draw you a killer day and a half ride but..... I have to know specifically.... what will be your route towards the riding area? On Friday morning/mid-day wIll you be coming in from Maryville, Townsend, Gatlinburg, Maggie Valley, North Georgia or Chattanooga-ish or can you drop in on a Heli? :)

Seriously? Wow man that would be rockin.
We're coming from Indiana so I guess coming in past Gatlinburg or Maryville either one looks about the same. Tried Deals gap resort but all sold out so Robbinsville looked next closest.

Specifically, Google nav, quickest route. Makes no difference to us.
Gatlinburg traffic might should be avoided?

    Good places to stay:

    Phillips motel in Robbinsville.

Applecover Inn in Maggie Valley. Maggie Valley is a GREAT location for dual sport riding but it's not the ideal location of you want to go to Deal's Gap.

If at all possible, you should hit up Tellico Grains for an early lunch on Saturday. Don't get there too late as they will have sold out. If you do miss it, don't worry. Head down to Tellico Kats!! It's on the Skyway by the base of Old Furnace Road (which is fun to ride). They are super nice, you'll get more than enough food, and the balcony out back is a great place to eat.
