When I say died, I actually mean the battery (which is a fairly new Odyssey)
was dead so it's obviously not charging. Battery going "click-click" in other words. Had to sit and wait for a small reservecharge to get the bike started.

Will charge the battery up and check it. Then I'll start with brushes and voltage regulator troubleshooting. From there move to diode board if that's not the issue. If that's not the case will go through the rest and of course check all
    connections.

We are sure it is the gen light coming on, and not the oil light when it is getting hot?:eek1

Ha ha...oh yes! Definitely generator light. I must be getting "some" charge,
but it's not full on. The light is dim when on, and sometimes flickers. To me
seems like brush "bounce" but V regulator going out can do this too?

I have an red 83 ST the last four #'s are 7224 looks like I have the second bike imported in the U.S.? I've had the bike for about 8 years and bought it second hand from a delear in chicago who sold it new. I have installed a PD Tank and PIAA lights mounted on a bracket that I found on ebay.de for the 79 R65. I plan on doing a complete service this winter on it. some mods I have been pondering is R100 jugs, taller 5th gear, a kick starter and upgrading the electrical, however I am not sure what electric system to use Endurlast or motoelectric?

    Congrats!

Looking at the serial #, though I don't think your bike would be that high on the import list - the first page has everyone listed in ascending number order. Without looking up your production date, I would guess it falls into Spring of 83 sometime. Mine is 7051 with a build date in Oct, 82. Hard to tell the sequence of imports, though.

I wonder if BMW can provide import info on a serial number?

    Congrats on the cool bike!
His was made 12/1982 so it's an earlier bike than I would have thought by quick gander at the serial. 10/82 was first month of USA destined production and started -6207001. Would be interesting to know where #001 serial is now.

BMW Classics Group no longer has intact import records. I checked with Germany after getting my bike home. Have some info. about this over on
the R80ST Rider's Group (also links to 60+ factory photos). Started collecting the original importer data there to send back to Germany for what we can get. More ambitious of a project than I had led myself to believe at first

    Thanks for asking.
Not this week I have not been able to tear into it. Step 1: Did order a proper
battery charger to keep the Odyssey on a Float charge.

    UPDATE1 10/28: received a OMAX-6A-1B (Odyssey's charger for the dry cell) yesterday.
Charged up last night and will see what kind of output I'm getting soon. Now I can at
    least keep the battery maintained.

UPDATE2 11/12: Went through everything and checked measurements and grounds.
Culprit seems to be the Rotor. Will post more on install and result.

Purchased last year, 4th owner (I think). A work in progress. Still need to track down BMW touring bag mounts. Here it is in several configurations.

    Nice looking bike!

What is the origin of that front mudguard? I currently have the original ST fender on mine, but am considering a GS-style one.

UFO universal supermoto fender; http://www.oemcycle.com/Item/product/5187, requires drilling 4 mounting holes, does not give good rain protection.

Can you provide a link? I just logged on to Yahoo Groups and searches turned up nothing for R80 ST.

Edit: Never mind... I just found it by removing the spaces in R80ST.

Hugo is doing fine, but got a bit busy with personal and professional life...so he asked me to do some of the day to day moderating work since I seem to either be near a computer during the day, and travel with a laptop...

For those who don't know me from other lists, I am a long term airhead (three in the stable now) and Jill (my lovely wife) and I run the Shinysideup Motorcycle Rescue Ranch, now located to Johnson City, Tennessee. This weekend I need to find the letters and mount them on the new shop.

We are planning on hosting an Airhead Tech Day come spring. Our new shop is 34x70.
