Ten motorcycles and a two man chase crew descend on the tiny hamlet of Prineville for a three day, 450 mile off road adventure. Plan is to meander in a big loop and ride parts of the Millican and East Fort Rock trail system, see geological features like Hole in the Ground, Fort Rock, Crack in the Ground and the Paisley Caves, and find out who’s man enough to down a 30 oz steak and all the trimmings. Good times, new friends, adventure and some of the best off-road riding in the world!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

    DAY 1 – Prineville to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Christmas Valley.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

7 am we meet at the staging area with the goal of kickstands up at 8 am. Some of the guys are there and ready at 7:01. Some (not naming names Mark and Dave) decided to take the scenic route to the staging area by way of Redmond.

As you can see the soil is perrrrrrfect. It had rained HARD the last couple days and I was watching the forecast on an hourly basis. The rain did not let up until this morning as we drove to the staging area. But the weather broke and was warming up nicely. Couldn’t have asked for a better combination: nice tacky soil (no dust), clear skies and cool air.

We have a little group huddle, ask for a blessing on the trip and we are off!

Kickstands were up just after 8. At 8:30 we are 7 miles down the trail.

One of my favorite places is on top of the Cinder Cone. There’s a spectacular view of the Cascades and 7 peaks including Bachelor, Broken Top, the Three Sisters, Washington and <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Jefferson. Red had crafted a nifty tool holder out of PVC pipe that was strategically placed on the lower frame right in front of the skid plate. While cleaning up the carnage from his get off we found out that lava rock really is harder than plastic and his tools were scattered somewhere earlier on the Cinder Cone rock fest trail. Fortunately we will be back in the general area in a few days and will see if we can recover his tools.

Hole in the Ground is a volcanic “marr” crater that sits on the edge of what used to be a massive ocean. One of the interesting aspects is that it sits within only a few miles of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Fort Rock, a similar crater, yet Fort Rock was created in the ancient ocean.
